First of all, welcome to DreamViews!
Our first lucids are always a great inner discovery. The sensation of being in a dream carries a lot of meaning. Congrats on your first lucid!
About the way you became lucid: since you woke up in the night, your mind could have stayed semi-conscious. Dreams come really quick after you wake up in the middle of the night, so that's fairly possible (the whole WBTB technique is based on this principle).
No matter how conscious we are in lucid dreams, they are never just like real life. That's because a lot of your dream comes from your subconscious mind, making you feel like you're not fully in control of it. But believe it, you are. It just takes a bit of cleverness to do whatever you want.
For example, in my last lucid, I was trying Dreamviews' Lucid Task of the Month, which consisted of making an animal out of water. At the time I got lucid, I was in a building, with no water around. That was no barrier for me: I used my telekinetic powers to locate a fountain just a floor down, and I didn't even mind to go down there. I used remote viewing + psychic powers to move the water and create a wolf out of it (I love wolves ). I bet that, if I went downstairs in order to do the task, I'd probably lose my focus on it and go do something else.
Another example was when I wanted to phase through a wall. I tried so hard, but I couldn't do it. so I told myself "Phasing mode ON" (read this on someone's dream journal ) and then my body became immaterial and I could phase through the wall. Dream control involves flexibility and creativity: if one way sounds hard, try it another way!
That said, I can only wish you best of luck on your next lucids!
