Is there a such thing as "type"? Wouldn't dc's just be artificial personalities being fired off your subconscious mind?

There are most definitely different types of dream characters which one will encounter in their journeys through the dream world. Many dream characters simply exist in a some what detached nature from the dream and the dreamer, such characters appear to behave senselessly and speak in the random language of dreamspeak (which is usually nonsense).

Then of course there are characters which are very much part of the dream itself, such dream characters will often make their own attempts to communicate with the dreamer in some way or another. At times these characters will often represent various aspects of our subconscious mind, they appear very 'real' to the dreamer and can carry on some what logical (yet at times quite cryptic) conversation. Dream Characters such as this can also use sources outside of your own mind for inspiration.

Much like our waking life, dream characters feature many different types of personality traits. Many characters in your dreams are part of the faceless herd, yet there are definitely characters which exist on a much more complex level- it is in these characters which you can use to understand yourself and communicate with your subconscious mind.

The nature of DCs has been a focus of mine for months now. I've noticed that in my dreams they tend to become evasive and even hostile once they are recognized as Dream Characters. They seem like normal people until that mental shift is made, then they are completely different - often grabbing me and just being real jerks.

If you search around, you'll find a thread I started some time ago titled something like "Dream Character's Character." There are a lot of threads on the subject, including one posted in the past few days where all the DCs in somebody's lucid dream turned into her when confronted.
