Saying my name in an LD

I was just napping this morning after waking up and before getting up for uni and I slipped into a WILD (as I have the good fortune of being able to do )

I thought I'd try a little expirement as I had to wake up soon any way so I tried saying my name' I got as far as saying

'my name is S...' and then my voice came out in a choking sound and all of my front teeth shattered.

The pain was actually so intense that I woke up instantly, and it didn't go away until I felt to see if my teeth were alright.

Has anyone else had even a remotely similar experience? Has anyone been able to say their name properly in a dream?

Never tryed it myself, but read ETWOLD. There's a section just about his saying his name in a dream and being entirely fine. Were you expecting something adverse to happen?

Hm. Shattering teeth? I'll have to try that on a DC one time.

Well I've always been told that it couldn't be done so that may not have helped. However I went into the task completely confident that I could do it (right up until the S). Now I don't really want to try it again... :-)

Can you come up with one good reason for why it can't be done? Whoever told you that, have you asked that person to give you a reason?

Like Tank mentioned, there is a whole section in that book devoted to this fantastic rumor that a person can't say his/her name in a LD.

Try it again. And if it doesn't work, think of me standing there shaking my finger at you and try again! Hehe.

I've told DC's my name in dreams before. Had no problem with it and never even considered that there should be one.

That might be the defining factor right there... sammy said she had heard it was impossible and even though she felt confident it didn't work... subconscious maybe?! I dunno...

Most certainly. The number one rule of dreaming? If you expect it to happen, it will happen. Sammy thought something bad would happen and BAM, you just got your teeth rearranged.

I've read somewhere that when you sleep you still hear things, but your brain decides to tune out what it finds unimportant. Since you've come to recognize with your name so well, your brain eventually picked up on it and finds it important enough to wake up to..

Probably has something to do with that.

Well as I said before, I was 100% confident that I could do it but it still didn't work. Hmmm, maybe I'll summon my subconcious and give it a good talking to

And Casualtie, you may be right. I often sleep talk and maybe I heard myself saying my name. Although I can think of nicer ways for my brain to wake me up!!!

That's pretty true. I was thinking one night about random stuff and decided to whisper my name (while awake) and noticed it sounded weird like it drawed my attention, but then tryed randomly saying other names and it didn't feel the same as saying my name

No no no you guys! This is all psychological, just trust me on this. I know it's entertaining to think that there's some obstacle in saying your own name *insert twilight music here*, but really, there isn't.

Even if we think we are 100% confident in a lucid dream, our subconscious might not share that confidence. Sometimes I'm 100% sure I can fly but I actually can't. Same thing.

Iv never had a problem saying my name in a lucid dream before. I agree with Mes Tarrant, it is certainly psychological.

Or impossible, as long as you believe it is.

You're probably right. I'm not a neurologist and, now that I think about it, read that information in a children's Q and A book : PPP

Believe me, you are most likely not 100% confident. You don't realize it, but you aren't. It's subconscious.

      And Citizen...
Greedy? Hell no. Absolutely not. Dream away.

Thanks tank. I'm hoping that it'll all get better soon but... well... I guess I'll sleep on it.
