First Lucid (I think? Question follows.)

Okay, well I am pretty sure that I had my first lucid dream last night (I'll explain why it's pretty sure at the end).

So it started as a normal dream, and I was in the gymnasium of a dance at my school. Hardly any people were there, and they were all doing the same dance. I had to slip into the bathroom so I could change into a dress. As I was in there, I noticed my mouth fill with liquid and black stuff smudged on my hand, and I suddenly remember that I had eaten or done something that caused me to become "cursed" and I though that these were the effects. My sisters hollered in from behind the door that they better not catch me throwing up my meals, or else. So I had to swallow the stuff in my mouth and just told them I was going to go to the bathroom. But before I could do anything else, these eyeballs started appearing all around me. I was freaked until I noticed they were just bouncy balls painted like eyeballs, but then I was freaked none the less, thinking it was the curse and whatnot, so I got down on my knees and was trying to get them to stop coming from wherever they were coming from, pratically hysterical. Then I was like "This can't be real, it has to be a nightmare, I have to be dreaming!" So I started to do a reality check by putting my finger through my palm, but it didn't work; I kept on hitting my skin. So, still on edge, I kept on stabbing my finger into my palm to no avail, then I felt like each stab was like clicking around in a forum (??) so as I did it more, and reached the end of the forum, my finger went thorugh my palm, and I had the revelation that I was dreaming.

Everything went black then, and that was the part I had been dreading, just being in a desolate nothingness. But I was more excited. Then a blue screen appeared in the darkness, and I saw a mouse pointer come from the corner of it and click around, and a videogame appeared. I was confused as whether I was supposed to make this a scene, but ultimately deemed it lame, and when I backed up, it was just a computer, and I was in my house. Trying to stay cool, I went downstairs, still feeling excited at what I could do. My house was a lot more cluttered than usual, and just before I went outside, I saw our old dog Jem in the foyer. I said "Hello!" quickly, but then scurried outside, a little frightened to be in the house alone with the dream dog.

It was a little bit cloudy outside, and more than a little bit dingy everywhere, so I said "Vivid blue sky!" And the sky turned brighter, though the clouds didn't disappear. As I rushed down the hill leading to the road I debated on just taking off and flying right there, but I heard you would lose lucidity if you tried it to fast, so I decided to "moon jump" instead (running really fast, jumping, soaring through the air, then landing safely- my favorite part of my normal dreams), so on the road I went. Only it was hilly and gravely, so I wanted to change it until I heard a noise. Turning around, it was my nephew running towards Jem who was on the hill watching me (eessh). I was interested in interacting with my dream nephew when All of the sudden, my brother (who too is into lucid dreaming) Was beside me, all grins. I asked him in a mock jolly voice if he would fancy jumping with me, and he agreed, but suggested I change the hill to flat. I nodded, and closed my eyes, thinking of a flat road; opening them, nothing changed. I looked at him for guidance, and he said we could try together. So we threw our arms around eachothers shoulders, shut our eyes and shouted "Long Narrow Path!". And opened to the same thing. I heard another noise from the hill, but this time it was my mom, with a younger version of another sibling of mine, along with Jem and another little pooch. Before I could do something about her, I noticed this Bernese Mountain dog the size of a freaking lion sitting on our porch. Now, I am a huge dog lover. Especially big dogs. So I yelled at the top of my lungs "PUPPY!!!" and ran up the hill towards it, ignoring my mother's commands to settle down. When I reached the dog, I was so excited as I threw my arms around it, everything started to go black, and I was losing clarity, so I remembered the tricks and started to rub my hands together, but alas, I was already back in my bed. I woke up rubbing my hands together.

Now here's the thing: How do you know if you were really in a lucid dream and not just dreaming?
Because upon waking, I felt like it had just been a dream; that I had dreamed becoming lucid and controlling all that stuff. The dream was fresh in my mind, and I rememberd every detail (as far as I know), but it was not as real life or vivid as I had been expecting, and I felt like it had been a dream, just a very, very clear one.
So, was I just expecting to much out of lucidity? Do you just know if it was lucid, and the same if it had been a dream? It sounds like a silly question, and it is, but I am both confused and curious.

      Thanks!

same thing happen to me, i tried rubbing my hands for clairty but it failed! Advice was given to me that next time I should focus on a object and it should help me stablized. IDK sounds like a dream that you got lucid in the end but only for a little bit. Good luck and congradulations, I'm sure your next dream you will have more vividness.

How do you know if you were really in a lucid dream and not just dreaming?
Knowing the difference between LUCID DREAMING and DREAMING ABOUT LUCID DREAMING, is the fact that when you are in a Lucid Dream you 110% know that your in a dream. The best way I can describe it, is the fine line before you realize your dreaming, is almost like the dream stops for a timeout as you take that second to realize your dreaming...

Dreaming about Lucid Dreaming, is quite strange. You can possess all the control/power of a Lucid Dreaming, but still not become AWARE that it is indeed a dream...

If you were AWARE that it was a dream, if you knew in fact "This is a dream" then you were Lucid...

Just because it wasn't as vivid or realistic as waking life, doesn't mean you didn't have a Lucid Dream. First time Lucid's or even a few after that will seem fuzzy or blurry, and not quite all there, like a washed painting perhaps. You can have up to little or no control in the first lucid dream, and it can actually end fairly quickly in most cases....

To me, by what I read, it seems like you had your 1st Lucid Dream...

"This can't be real, it has to be a nightmare, I have to be dreaming!" So I started to do a reality check by putting my finger through my palm, but it didn't work; I kept on hitting my skin. AWARENESS!

      hope this helps

Yeah, I will definately try to focus on an object next time. I couldn't with this situation because when I realized it was fading, all I saw was black.
Thanks! Good luck to you as well!

      AWARENESS!

Thank you! This now makes me see that I was in a lucid dream (and gets me very excited).

Yes, I knew I was in a dream, but everything was really dingy, and I didn't have complete lucid powers, but I was aware, as my mind was racing with the thoughts of what I could do. I guess I was confused by waking up, and being unconfident, and thinking I was just dreaming it. I think I mistook that for it being not 100% clear.

Also which affirms it for me, is that I knew every detail when I woke up. And it didn't fade- I wrote it all down perfectly, in my dreamjournal, in retelling it to my brother, and to you. So now I'm anxious/excited to keep trying at it, and master the art.

Also, a quick question spiritofthewolf: How long have you been lucid dreaming? Are your dreams vivid and realistic like waking life now?

      Thanks again!

I have been Lucid Dreaming for just over 4 years now.. I had my first lucid dream June 11th, 2005. I came to this site the next day and have been here ever since.

My Lucid Dreams vary. The one I had today was pretty realistic and vivid. I remember some Lucid dreams that felt so vivid and realistic that it seemed I was "Locked" inside the dream because it couldn't get anymore real...

The trick though is if you want realistic/vivid LD's, when you become Lucid just stand there for a few seconds and let everything settle in around you. Let yourself calm down as well while your waiting for it all to come into focus. Once you feel like it has come into focus and your stable enough, go ahead and try something fun, or whatever comes to your head!

      Hope this helps!

hello, congratulations on your first lucid!
I don't want too keep you down, but..
when you woke up, why you have the doubt of not knowing if you were lucid?
      I mean...
to explain it in a better way.
when you were in the dream, you felt that it was you?

when you are in waking life, you can be sure you are conscious because you feel this conscious...
when you are dreaming and non-lucid, when you wake up, you understand that you were not conscious....
the point is, when you wake up, you still felt the same way? I mean, it was the concious YOU in the dream? or not?

basically, what happened to me, is that, I'm in the dream, for some reason I know I'm dreaming, but my ME CONSCIOUS doesn't arise, and it's horrible you know, because when you are in the dream you think it's all perfect, but when you wake up, you understand that it wasn't YOU, you weren't conscious...
I don't want to make bad to you, just helping to be 100% sure about what happened.

      bye

PD: for example, when you are in the dream, and you are LUCID, if you are in your dream house, you can recognize all the mess ups and differences...

Wow, I hope I can get to that point your at- but it will probably take quite a bit (yet still leaves me thrilled).

Yes, I find it kind of difficult to settle, I found myself wanting to do a billion things at once and didn't really take it it. Definately will let myself break into it slowly though- thanks for the tip!

Not getting me down at all, it was my first. (well maybe)

It's kind of hard to explain; like in the dream, I knew it was a dream, was aware of myself and my surroundings. Maybe I just didn't think of it, but I didn't picture myself asleep, nor know if I even realized that. I was just dreaming, it was a fact. When I woke up however, I remembered the dream in pretty perfect detail, but I just sort of had this feeling quite immediately that it was a dream itself- that I was dreaming I was lucid. It's really twisted, but I remembered the dream immediately upon waking- it was just rather dull, as compared to the vividness full lucids are (from what I've heard).

It's kind of like I said above; I remembered it perfectly, but I felt like it was my dream self acting on the lucidity, believing she was lucid, but in reality it was just a ruse.
And yes, I totally see what your saying! I understand your situation, and that's what it feels like to me. It felt like a real lucid as I was dreaming, but when I awoke, I had my doubts. Now I'm getting confused. Because in my dream house, I did notice how cluttered it was, as I knew I was dreaming, but still when I woke up, I thought that that was all a dream itself. Is that how it was for you? Perhaps it's just an early form of lucid, just not so vivid? Gah, complication haha.

when I have those False Lucid Dreams and I wake up I have the sensation...and know that it was a normal dream...a non-lucid.
listen, maybe you never know if it was REALLY lucid or not(you still have doubts), so, i tell you something, the moment you have another lucid dream, when you wake up and have NO DOUBTS about what happened...then that's a lucid dream with all the letters and without confusion..
      bye!
