i recall having my first sleeping lucid dream when after many years of being startled awake by falling from the sky dreams, after harshly hitting the ground, i eventually learned to transform the ground that i was hitting into a swimming pool, and depending on how fast/hard i was falling, i would have to dynamically extend the depth of the swimming pool further and further until i slowed down enough, and could swim to the surface in a lucid state without being startled awake...
since then i've learned different techniques like just flying away or even inverting the entire dimension below me, so that i ended up falling up back into the sky...and since then i've played some with inverting the dimension below/above me back and fourth into a kindof ping pong kindof loop, which gives me a fun of skydiving vertigo which can get incredibly amusing for someone who's generally terrified of heights.
another option i've come up with with the falling dream nightmares is simply turning off, slowing down or reversing gravitational pull...which can also be alot of fun once you get used to it...once you get used to it you can used this effect to catapult yourself into other dimensions/universes...
