      Repetitive nightmares and Freud

      For the last couple of years, since the time I was fifteen or sixteen, I'd say, when I have had nightmares they have been largely about snakes. In some dreams, I am surrounded by snakes of all shapes and sizes and I can't escape. In others, I am being chased or attacked by snakes. The most common snake in my dream is a rattlesnake. It may be because I've encountered multiple rattlesnakes in real life.

      The weird thing is, as I was doing research, I learned that Freud believed the snake to be a phallic symbol. The snake has also been considered a symbol of change, because it sheds its skin. Why this caught my attention is because starting when I was sixteen, I began physically transitioning from female to male (please don't criticize me for this or tell me I need to find god--I've gotten enough of that as it is).

      Interesting though, isn't it?

      The snake is a powerful symbol. It is often associated with negative things, but it has positive connotations as well. Fertility and change, as you mentioned, but also medicine:
