      I'm going to put this into context and play devil's advocate:

      Using a sort of illusion creating device, I manipulate what the population perceives in way to prevent the waging of wars and promote peace for everyone. Are they slaves?

      Ilusion of freedom

      Replaying parts of Assassin's Creed gave me the idea of posting this question:

      If people are enslaved without knowing it, are they really slaves?

      I know where I stand, but I'd like to hear other people's opinions.

      That makes them slaves even more so, no? Not only have they been denied freedom but they've also been deprived of knowledge of it. (Because if they know what freedom is, they would know that they are slaves, right?)

      I think that's about right.
