      Sabbath or Sunday?

      So which is it?

I read the bible and realize that there is absolutely no command in any part of it to worship on Sunday. I do find the 4th commandment blesses Saturday and calls it holy. So why is it that so many christians cherish Sunday instead of the Sabbath?

It was changed to sunday, cause when the Roman empire became christian, the emperor wanted his army to be christian. so he marched them all through a river, and said "You are all christian now!"..

so there was this massive pagan infusion into the church, and they all brought their pagan rituals into christianity. Sunday, is named "Sun"day, because it's when the romans used to worship the Sun-god. so they changed christianity over, so that the pagans didn't have to change their day of worship.

actually, personally i'm a Seventh Day Adventist, so i go to church on Saturday. and i think you're right about every day being God's day, but he also said, that you can work and do what you need to six days a week, but on the sabbath you're supposed to rest, and get in touch with god. etc. it's like.. special time with God.

Yeah, Constantine. ~320c.e I think. Originally a worshipper of Mithra (I think), which has some(but not as many as recent publications + every damn site on the net using those as sources) similarities to christianity. The easiest way to ease your people into a new religion is to adopt the same/similar holy days. People dont really care as long as they can still party on the same days . Going from the top of my head he changed:

      -The sabbath
-Easter? I know its inherited from some non-christian belief. Probably from this time
-Christmas (was actually the birthday of.... Sol-Invictus?)

Anyone got any other things he changed? I'll go read up on him and see if that stuff about Mithra is correct. I wish the net wasnt so idiotic for these matters.

p.s I always wondered what seventh day adventist meant. Thanks for clearing it up!

i agree, and also i believe it doesnt matter which day you go to church, i believe they just have the Sabbath to remind people of God and His presense (i haven't gone to church in ages... bad me!)

I thought this was a great Biblical explanation...

I'm glad to see that most of these facts are correct and that there is an interest in this subject. Pyrhho, I am a Seventh-Day Adventist too and I am just wondering how people can explain why the Sabbath has been changed. First of all, a couple of things in that link that was posted up were pretty distorted (especially the Lord's Day stuff and the verses about Paul), and everyone should realize that Sunday was put in place by the Catholic church, not by God or by the Bible. Secondly, InfiniteReality is right. Everything belongs to God, even our time. But the truth is people must work and we're talking about a day set apart by Christ for rest. Obviously we don't have a day of rest everyday cause we need to win our daily bread.

Unfortunately, many Protestants have embraced Sunday worship and are paying homage to the very church they dispised so much. If you don't believe it, I'll put up a link soon that states - in the words of Catholics - the very thing I'm talking about. The Protestants ran from the Catholics in search of truth but seemed to stop short of gaining it all.

I pay homage TO GOD (on Sunday), not to the Catholic church, or to ANY organization/institution. But you are right... there are those (Protestants and Catholics both) who seem to have no clue about the Sabbath being anything more than going through some kind of religious motion or ritual...

I think it is futile and legalistic for anyone to say that one day is "better" or "more right" in the sight of God to worship than another (Romans 14 is pretty clear about that) since to say that one "should" or "shouldn't" is nothing more than an effort saturated in legalism and attempting to Lord over others.

Another point, which I also like about worshipping on Sunday is that Sunday is actually the FIRST DAY of the week (and still is on the Hebrew calendar), not the LAST DAY as we have come to view it here in the U.S. The ideas that support this (though not DIRECTLY Biblical) include PUTTING God first above and in all things - and also reserving it as a DAY OF CELEBRATION under the New Covenant rather than simply exercising an Old Covenant (Old Testament) rite ("day of rest"). This celebration is significant in that Christ came and triumphed over the judgment brought upon us by the law (Old Testament). By the way, I have several friends that are Seventh Day Adventists and there are only a few minor disagreements of scriptural interpretation that I have with them, but still consider them to be brothers and sisters in Christ. So... bless yer hart, dude!
