How I See It

[SomeGuy]’s Theory of Life:

I live life by my own set of rules. There are three main principals that I follow. I figured I would share them with you, since I feel extra philosophical today.

Principal One:
Live in the Now:
Live in the Now. If you fret too much about the past, you will end up wasting lots of time wishing you didn’t do things the way you did, and you will continue to make all kinds of mistakes because your mind is set back a few years. You won’t realize what you are doing, and that will just add mistakes you wish you could go back and change. Well, suck it up, and realize you can’t go back and change. You screwed up. Everyone does.

If you keep your mind set on the future, the same result will happen. You will be to concerned for where you are going, and that will keep your mind away from the problems at hand. Also, life will seem shorter to you because you wasted all this time looking to where you want to be, and not seeing what matters currently; what is happening now.

Focus on the time at hand. If you look at what today’s problems are, deal with them quick and the way you think they should, without worry of what may happen later, you will have more time to yourself to do what you want to do, which will affect the future and the past.

Dealing with problems with the mindset of “How will this affect me now?” will help you make fewer mistakes, so you don’t have to mull over mistakes (or at least as many mistakes) that get dumped into the past. Also, having this mindset can help achieve the goals you want easier by allowing you to keep your views of the future clear of what you have to do now.

Now, I’m not saying completely disregard the past/future. Keep your focus spilt into three parts. Not evenly of course. More like:

Past- 20%
Present – 60%
Future – 20%

The past and the future are very important, but remember: What you do now will affect the future, and the past. It only seems logical to focus mainly on the present.

The rest is coming soon. Stay calm, young padawans.

Hey guys, I'm back. Feels good man

A different way of saying your first principle is be AWARE moment to moment which is what Buddhism tries to bring to everyone I too have this principle floating in my mind but actually BEING in the now is much harder said then done I have noticed so many times I just lose concentration and live in a lower state of consciousness. This first thing you said is already a mouthful, one could devote their whole life to just trying to obtain that what you talk about.

Thanks for sharing your views.

I guess that's most of my problem. I live about 70% in the future, 20% in the past and 10% in the present. I'm goal oriented but somehow unmotivated because my goals are too overwhelmed. But they still give me strength I picture my world as I want it which is great until someone or circumstances through a monkey wrench into the works.

I live 33.3% in the past, 33.3% in the present, 33.3% in the future and .1% trying to figure out these percentages. The problem is that my living is listening to music, eating and watching t.v. My views on life are, do what you want as long as you don't kill anyone because everyone should have a fair chance at living. I don't like the fact that the world revolves around money. We are supposed to be able to hunt, adapt to the environment and sleep. Money shouldn't be a necessity. I wish we could be in the Middle Ages because I would love to be a knight.

Woah, I forgot about this. I gotta write the rest of my essay on this. WARNING: It goes a bit into atheism, in fact a good amount of it is devoted to that, so theists, please don't make a flame war when I post it.

I'd say it should be more like

Past - 10%
Present - 45%
Future - 45%

You can't live in the present without thinking how your decisions and actions will play out in the future.

You can't go back and change the past so I completely agree with that, but the future is unwritten, so present/future go hand in hand IMO.

How do you measure your percentage of mental focus on something?
