Relegious Jew and Ethnic Jew

I hear people all the time refer to jews as both a relegion and a Ethnicity but what does a Ethnic jew look like? or is there such a thing and if there isnt how has it come about. I

That's a good question; I've thought about this before myself. A friend of mine always referred to herself as Jewish when asked and I thought that was weird because I knew she was of Polish/Russian descent. That would be like an Italian answering the same question by saying they're Catholic. Just a theory, it may have to do with the stigma attatched to all Jews during Hitlers time regardless of country of origin.

Hey I call myself Jewish because I was raised Jewish, but i am not religious and do not believe in a God. I think it just has to do with the way we were raised to think of ourselves. I mean we heard growing up that the Jews live in Israel and we went to Hebrew school where everyone was Jewish. Its just something that evolved i suppose.

I No, you don't want to get into what an ethnic Jew looks like. What, are you trying bait up a tone of racial slurs here, and then after you get something ugly started, to say you only asked an innocent question. I insist it would not have been too innocent. No, an Ethnic Jew is a Jew by birth... that simple. It is like any other Nationality or Tribal Affiliation. An American Apache is born an Apache. It is a part of his Identity. A Frenchman, likewise, will always be a Frenchman. Even if he should ever renounce his Passport, in whatever Country should adopt him, he will remain a "Frenchman". Such is an Ethnic Jew. Now, about Religion. Stealing land and living upon War can hardly be considered a Religion, can it?

Yeah, a frum ("religious") Jew can be any male who practices Orthodox Judaism. An ethnic ("secular") Jew would be more like an Israeli; Israel being the official Jewish state.
