Hello,

I wanted to make a quick topic/discussion about referencing holy texts such as the Bible. I will only focus on the Bible in this post as I have yet to see anyone reference any other holy text (ie. Quran).

Quickly, I find that many people will use the Bible as a direct reference for their reasoning and morals. Christians alike follow and interpret many of the Bibles passages to support a paramount of ethics. However, there are several problems with this:

Firstly, as I stated in another topic, we must all be able to agree on this; God himself did not write the Bible. There is no signature from God or any indication that God himself wrote the very words in the Bible. Thusly, if a person did replicate the words from God and wrote them down, then they are not the words of God but the replication and interpretation of Gods words written down by human beings. If we are too assume that a human being has the full capacity to completely replicate Gods words then we also have to simultaneously deter God's power, ability, and comprehension for the human mind.

Secondly, the Bible has been manipulated and butchered by humans. Consider that the modern Bible's ommit many passages and books. For example, the Book of Mary Magdalene is not included within any Bible - why? Also, consider that in 325, at the Council of Nicaea, they edited and changed the Bible's contents for modern readers. It was the very purpose of the council.

Thirdly, if you are to reference the Bible for anything, then you must be prepared to accept all of the moral reasoning within the Bible. Consider that in Exodus 21:7 and thereafter, they fervently adhere to the selling and prostitution of your daughters. While people make references to the absurdity of homosexuality, they neglect these certain parts of the Bible. I can not derive the passage now, but it is also said that a man can rape a woman and merely have to pay 22 sheckles (I believe it is in Leviticus).

I purport these premises not as an argument to deter the validity of the Bible but to confirm that those who reference it reference it properly and logically. If we accept that the Bible is direct replication of Gods words and you only adhere to some of them, then I, (if I were a passionate Roman Catholic) would condemn you to damnation for selectively using God's words for your own benefits and morals while ignoring several others. Would you not?

Edit: After reviewing my sources for validity, I found that there was actually a second Council of Nicaea in 787. The Bible was again manipulated at this time!

Here's a good quote I came across a while ago:

"No man ever believes that the Bible means what it says; he is always convinced that it says what he means."
- George Bernard Shaw
