      Atheists are going to hell.

Lately the lack of argument here has been disturbing me.

So tell me, who on D/V is going to hell?
      What is hell?
      Why is there a hell?
Is there there such thing as the hell you described?
Why do people believe in brimstone hell?

I personally don't believe in the brimstone concept of hell. I believe in the Jewish belief in hell.

Existence after life is not concrete in Judaism and may be portrayed as a state of neutrality, an eternal nothingness ("sheol", often mis-translated as hell), simply non-life.

According to Jewish teachings, hell is completely not physical; rather, it can be compared to a very intense feeling of shame. People are ashamed of their misdeeds and this constitutes suffering which makes up for the bad deeds in the final moments of his/her life. You can obviously avoid this by following the bible's moral code.

Is also mentioned in the Kabbalah, where the soul is described as breaking, like the flame of a candle lighting another: the part of the soul that ascends being pure and the "unfinished" piece being reborn.

      Well post your thoughts away.

P.S: The thread title was supposed to be ironic.

Hell is a state of mind, like everything else. Depression, or anything negative.

      I laughed. love it.

Hell is a concept designed to frighten people into submission to the Church, it's the punishment for disobeying the Great Surveillance Camera in the Sky.

But if there is Hell, it's where I'd rather end up. All the interesting people are there, and all the Christians will be in Heaven and thus very far from me

Yeah I think I would hate to be the exception to the rule. The only non-(whatever religion was right) in heaven? Do you know how annoying that is. I think it would be less painful to be in hell than around them lol.

Yes, it's "controlling the masses" type of thing. If there is a hell, it proves there is an inperfection with the big guy upstairs.

Also, with how humanity has changed the words in the years to seem better or to bring order how the hell can there be a "right" religion? and how can you be punished for not believing in what a "god" can do to people? If he is the creator he allowed us to alter things we don't like, changing rules to our needs. Like i said, how can you be punished for not knowing?

hell is never seeing south park after you enjoy it.
Like i said, a state of mind.

For the popular "fire and brimstone" vision of hell you can thank an Italian poet named Danté and his great work Inferno, first section of The Divine Comedy, which more or less fathered the Italian language. It's like a good joke that just never died.

His ninth circle of Hell wasn't fire and brimstone though, it was ice...and Satan chewing up people...that was an interesting read in 9th grade

Anyway, I don't believe in a fire and brimstone hell...I think the Jewish idea of Hell is rather like what I believe in actually. Whether the Bible is the moral code I still need to look into

Hannibal Lecter has more admirable morals than the Old Testament and anything you can find in the New Testament was common sense to begin with. Unless you're homosexual, in which case I'll keep a pile of hot coal warm for you when I get there.

Well, back in the day, I'm sure it would've been a lot more persuasive to the peasants when, instead of telling them that they should give all of their money to the church because it makes you morally pure, the preachers tells them that if they don't give the church all of your money, you'll spend the rest of eternity on fire.

Apparently this classic trick still works on a quite a few people over in the US.

Yea. Hell is a made-up land of pain and suffrage to scare people into joining a religion.

A control method of course. Nothing more, nothing less.

Not even a concept worthy of Philosophical speculation.

Did you not read the original post? No, don't answer that. You didn't.

What you did do, however, was attempt to be clever in a thread. And you failed.

      Now GET OUT.

Everyone knows that Hell is not a place of fire and brimstone. It is a place where there is "weeping (the shame that Dreamworld referred to) and gnashing of teeth".

It pleases me to no end that all Christians are headed for Atheist Hell when they die. You die, then, "poof" you end up in a big black void for all eternity with nothing to do but contemplate the silent darkness.

I hope everyone realises that atheism has absolutely nothing to do with the existence of any kind of afterlife.

You can be an atheist and have a firm belief in the afterlife.

Atheism is not a lack of belief in anything beyond science, it is A-THEISM.

Nonetheless the sort of people who are atheists tend to be logical and rational and hence tend to not believe in an afterlife either, but they are in no way mutually exclusive.

I know, I know, I'm playing off of that very misperception.
