      The "Falling" Sensation

I posted this question about a year ago and didn't get any responses, so I'd like to ask it again.

You know that "falling" sensation you get? Physically, what do you think is going on in your body? Is it just random signals being sent to the brain?

I ask because I notice that I get some extreme cases of the falling sensation, including the wind gushing across my faces at a faster and faster rate (not that it's bad).

      Any thoughts?

      Thanks!

I think I know what your talking about.

Sometimes I've realized I was dreaming, then suddenly I feel myself falling and I know I'm only laying down in bed. Along with the intense numbing sensations.

Or sometimes when I drift to sleep, I have a brief moment of the falling sensation following a slam into the bed and feeling like I just had a spasm. A hypnic jerk I believe is what its called.

The wind blowing? I don't know. What happens to your body during these phases, I wish I knew. I think they may just be hypnogogic hallucinations or something since it's during WILD.

Sorry I couldnt answer your question

It's only a hallucination, nothing to worry about.

Oh and lucidspark, it's hypnagogic, with an A .

Prove it. It may be a hallucination, hypnagic, but you have no better idea of what those words mean in terms of brain function than you do of how the phenomenon might be something else outside of the brain.

Seriously. Do us all a favor. Enlighten us. Read this, understand it well enough to give an informed critique, then tell us what is what.

Why do you keep spreading that link around? Very few people are going to want to read through that entire thing.

Because it's valuable? Relevant? We are talking about consciousness, no?

I know that people don't read. It's obvious. But I thought that at least a few people might be interested in what science actually says, rather than just spouting about what they think it says. People's opinions are so fixed, so sure ...so uninformed.

And this an excellent piece. Very concise well-integrated state of the art quantum model of the brain.

I've been reading in these areas for years. Complex. But this sums it up well. It's accessible. And even if you just read the first bit, you'll begin to get a clue.

      So... why not?

I for one am glad to see that someone gives a shit about trying to find the actual answers to things rather than spout off random opinions based on wikipedia articles (particularly in the research forum!) Thanks for the link, I'm gonna take a look at it when I get a chance.

I clearly remember a falling dream a few years ago. I decided in the dream to hit the bottom as I thought that I wouldn't die. I hit the bottom and then stood up unharmed. Just thought I'd share that for some insane reason.

Cool. The other night I was walking around a crowded area with families everywhere in shorts and carrying towels. Must have been a big public pool. I was busting for a piss and nearly went in a couple of places before realising it was inappropriate.

I had a black woolen ski mask a la terrist on and got embarrassed and took it off. That was the trigger for the I'm having a dream moment that I missed d'oh. This has nothing to do what so ever with this thread but I've had a long ride in the cold and stopped at the pub and it's 2:30 in the morning and time for a shower. Bloody cold though woof must be climate change or chemtrail conspiracy, mini Ice age or some other outlandish but possibly real scenario.

I'm sorry your body was all scrunched up though Don.

You guys think I don't give a shit?

All right I'm not going to cry about it, I'm just a little hesitant about downloading this.

Sure I'll go ahead and start the download but while I'm at it (I don't have the updated version of Adobe), I'll try to find the answers. I really am interested in knowing since I want to study sleep disorders. I know I can't get a degree with wikipedia alone lol

Update: Well... it's 3:10 in the morning and i'm pretty fucking tired. I'll look into it though, don't worry

Meanie. Instead of pointing out a link and cyberslapping why do you not summarize the article and tell us how it is relevant? I agree with you that peer-reviewed research should be what people cite their opinions and claims from, but it really does not take the conversation further by playing the "almighty" card and acting intellectually superior and not attributing anything to the conversation.

Back at Hockey's question: From my highschool psychology class I learned that a "falling sensation" is associated with sleep spindles in stage 2. Also these sleep spindles create the body jerks that happen when you begin to fall asleep.

I thought that only lasted like a second or two. and do k-complex's have anything to do with it? I did have a hypnatic jerk today when attempting a WILD btw

my somewhat off topic quiestion is what exactly is stage 1 sleep?

I'm a meanie? Sorry. I don't intend slapping, but I am tired of summarizing. At worst, I'm a pedantic, conceited, tedious and predictable bore... and maybe right.

We get summaries of summaries of summaries. Comments are fifth-hand, sloppy hearsay diluted out of any semblance to the original, Chinese whispers, and no one bothers to read the source. The map is not the terraine. A summary is not a text.

I introduced this link several times, in different threads, in connection with possible quantum consciousness, which is why Oniman7 fussed at me. For Oniman7, I did not summarize. Mea culpa.

But, like I then explained above. "... this an excellent piece. Very concise well-integrated state of the art quantum model of the brain."

I can't summarize it any better than that.

Really, it's good stuff. Check it for yourself.

I didn't fuss at you so much as point out the problems inherent with expecting the general populace to read a work that long or scientific. The fact that you spread it around several different threads didn't help either.

I know. I beg your forebearance. The same questions arise. Different thread
publics have the same half-baked opinions, lack the same information. I'm not 'spreading' this like spam or something! Chris King's article is the best "quick & dirty" summary I've found.

If only one person finds something new and valuable in this, could you still blame me?

Anyway, have you read it? It not that scientific. More like good emperialistic philosophy.

So ... anyway, I don't want to irk you. Can I upload this to DV archives or such? Other constructive suggestions?

No, I never blamed you in the first place. It's just a bit annoying when the same thing gets spread around multiple threads. Call it my pet peeve (is that how you spell that?)

I'm pretty sure we all share the same interests here.

Who doesn't like to lucid dream am I right?

People are just easily annoyed when they think someone is being too cerebral.

      "Respect" "Easy." "No worries."

Well. How to say that, to someone you don't know ... in a context like this?

If you read the back & forth, maybe you'll see that Oniman7 and I were just trying to find a common etiquette.

How to say .. "No worries. I agree to that. Even if I disagree, to that or something else, I know it's you, that you'll hear me when I tell you why".... ?

Sorry it all seemed so cerebral. But maybe you'll call it cerebral anyway, if I call it an exercise in calibrating "heart-mind".

      Still, you were right, B-K.

      Easy. No worries.
