Does what you eat before bed affect dream recall? Take 2!

OK, the first try at this experiment kind of fell apart, so let’s try again with a little different menu and structure. This time, we will use the food pyramid instead of taste buds. We will also use a free format instead of the structured one we used before.

I'm being a little selfish here, but my son needs something for his science fair experiment in the spring and I thought this would be a great place to get TONS of data.

I’ve included a picture of the food pyramid at the bottom for reference.

Problem: Does they type of snack I eat before bed influence the number of dreams I can remember?

Hypothesis: type of snack each night before bed will cause me to remember more dreams each night than any other type of snack.

Variables: There are so many variables, all I can hope to accomplish is to monitor them and determine if one of them is a factor as well. Variables include: Age, sex, race, nationality, mood, fatigue level.

Control: On some nights, do not eat a snack. On others, choose foods from multiple groups. Be sure to indicate in your log when you do this.

      Procedure:
      1) Identify snacks from each the food pyramid groups:
      Fats, Oils & Sweets Group
      Milk, Yogurt & Cheese
Meat, Poultry, Fish, Dry Beans, Eggs & Nuts Group
      Vegetable Group
      Fruit Group
Bread, Cereal, Rice & Pasta Group

Try to be creative and eat foods from all the food groups.

      2) This experiment will run for 8 weeks. Perform steps 3 and 4 each night for the entire 8 week time period.

      3) Before bed, write down your snack(s) and which food group(s) it belongs to and log the following information in your journal:
Food eaten: (Remember, if you are doing a control, indicate no snack or all the snacks)
      Pyramid group:
      Mood(happy, sad, worried, excited, etc):
      Physical tiredness( rested, tired, exhausted):

      4) In the morning, record the number of dreams you remember

      5) At the end of the week, PM your log sheet to me and begin another.

If you are interested in helping my son win in the biological category (and bring attention to dreamviews), post in this topic.

He is planning on putting a URL to this experiment on his display board. I will have my Dreamviews business cards ready by then and sitting next to the board.

( If we do this right, maybe some of you can use this as your experiment as well? )

The experiment starts Sunday night, December 5th.

Here is the log sheet to use each week, please print it out and make copies:

NOTE: Include the hours slept each night as well!

      Week beginning date:
      Name:
      Age:
      Sex:

Are you working hand in hand with Richard Simons?
I am going to have to skip out on this one Seeker, sorry. I do not want to spread myself to thin and give do credit to the Research I am already involved in.

Is anyone still doing this experiment? If so, please PM me your results to date.

Also, this is an open ended experiment, anyone can join at any time and send me results.

I think I'm going to have to drop out...I don't even think I have one full week of a chart, just a bunch of scrambled days here and there, so sorry I couldn't keep up.

Now that I'm not running helter-skelter again, I'll see if I can get back on it. Sorry for being an uncooperative test subject.

The beauty of this experiment is that we can use ALL data, even if there are gaps. We will perform a statistical analysis of the results when finished.

So, please, any time that can be allocated would help a lot!

Alright. This is gonna make me gain weight, but it's for a good cause
Seeker asked me to help towards the end of February, which I will do

Just another thought - lucid dreams are easier to recall
So if I become lucid, does it count?

In case I missed sending someone a PM. Please PM me all of your data from when you started until today.

I know some of you have been working on this for over a month, and some just a few days, but I'm going to try to collect the data every Friday from now on.

It's taking a lot of our time to analyze the results.

      Thanks everyone!

I've found that food of a high acidity causes increased occurance and vividness of dreams. One hypothesis may be because your body finds these harder to digest or break down. Also form past experience, I have found that strong antidepressants help immensly in the vividness, strangeness, lucidness and many other 'nesses' as well as the rate at which they occur. Seeker's chart deal is a little too much structure for me, but il see what i can do. I have 2 days logged already and will give an update to Seeker after about a week. Il be looking into spicy foods later in the week.

good luck all you dream foodies. FC

this might be a stupid question(dont say no question is a stupid question i have heard some pretty bad ones) but what kind of teacher does ur kid have seeker? if i did something on lucid dreams for my scince project or something my teacher whould give me an "f" for lucid dreaming being implasuible.

He has a very good science teacher, however, it did take a little clarification before she approved the project.

Say, I'm still needing someone from the following Continents/countries:

      Canada
      South America
      Mexico
Continental Euope (maybe even the UK if Janiaz forgets again =P)
      Russia
      China
