Wasting Gas when you...

making the wrong exit/junction at a freeway..at night! Don't you hate it when you drive in a new area on the freeway, and have a hectic time trying to get the right junction, and make a mistake and take the opposite one, only to find yourself in need of taking the next exit, reversing your steps (or tracks) in order to get back to that one place where you made the mistake, and do it all over again? I was actually reminded of this in a dream. It happened to me when trying to take a carload of people to the drive-in movies...HMMM it was NOT GOOD FOR OUR SCHEDULE. I seriously get pissed off at how "accurate" the junction and merging signs tell me as I am approaching them.

Do I hate it!! I broke out into a nervous sweat just reading your post about taking the wrong freeway exit at night!

I lovingly call myself "directionally challenged" cuz I can get lost in my own neighborhood!!

Want to make me cry.. just tell me to go east for two miles and then go south!!

Good directions for me would be "go to 5th avenue and turn right at the Exxon gas station.. go for two more blocks and then turn left at the stop sign!"

I don't get lost easily, mainly because I can maintain a mental image of what the journey looked like and keep track of absolute direction (north, easy, south, west)

this applies to me mainly in new areas, where the signs are "trying" to tell me something, but I end up following the wrong route, when I thought it was the right one. Like a sign that points "to Los Angeles" that is on the side of the road that I don't believe it should be on, and it leads me there anyway, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's hard to explain..lol.

Clairity, that was soo funny...reminds me of something that happened yesterday. I had a friend down from up north, and we went to the city.
came to time to go home, and he was like 'where's the bus station?'
and i'm like 'oh, it's this way'
an hour and a half later, it's raining, and i've taken him round the same block, THREE TIMES.
So we are soaking wet. I'm miserable, cold, and tired. He's still chuckling.
'Okay liz,' he says to me. 'my turn to find the bus station.'
He walked down an avenue, made a couple of right turns, and there it was!!
And he's never been to this place before, and I HAVE!!
He has an excellent sense of direction for the city, i'm better in the middle of nowhere...without me as a guide, he'd be buggered...

I can get lost going to the bathroom... Seriously though - in the woods, I'm invariably fine. In a car I'm invariably lost.

I put a GPS/mapping system (delorme) in all my vehicles about a year ago. What a life changing experience!

I navigate circles around all my friends that used to laugh at me. "Turn left in 300 feet Turn left in 100feet. Left turn approaching now. Continue on -road- for 30 seconds and turn right on -other-road-. Approaching right turn now."

Mmmmm - no more stress.
