What languages do you speak/ want to speak?

My native language is English, I speak Spanish and Romanian, but not quite fluently yet. I'm picking up Japanese soon and I plan to learn Hindi afterwards. And then after that I want to learn Russian, Turkish, and Thai. ... I want to be a linguist FYI...

I've always wanted to learn a multitude of languages but I have no knack for it. I took half a year of Spanish in High School but I couldn't handle the verb usage. It just confused me to no end because I speak American English and I could never figure out using verbs any other way. Part of me has always wanted to be dropped into another country and made to "sink or swim". I think I could learn other languages if I was always around them.

I learned Spanish in high school too. They only had two languages to pick from: Spanish and French because the Russian teacher retired. I chose Spanish even though I'm not really interested in many Hispanic countries, but I'm glad I took it because it really helped with my Romanian. All that Latin Languages so far have come really easily to me.

I speak very good German, not fluent, but I seem to instantly digest German grammar and vocab. I wish I knew Russian, because it seems like a really interesting language from the little that I've studied on my own.

My native language is Serbian, and Bosnian and Croatian are nearly identical. Also, Macedonian and Bulgarian have some similarities and are understandable. I'm learning English at school for 10 years already and learned French for 4. I also picked up a little Spanish from TV.

It didn't help me that my Spanish teacher was somewhat insane. She would often interrupt herself and say: "Hop like a bunny, bark like a dog" and go through the motions and everything lol. My geography teacher was almost as bad. He would start out teaching us, let's say, about Spain and then he'd think of nudist beaches and talk about them for the rest of the class It also didn't help that I was creating my own language back then. I was probably up to about 5,000 characters (including alphabet, numbers, names, phrasology and wordology) and I was playing around with making it speakable. I had a hard time focusing on the best of my classes...

Zhaylin- that would drive me insane, the 5000 character thing. Do you mean 5000 character's worth of words or, like chinese, with a trajillion different symbols. I'm in the middle of creating a language and I have a pretty much perfect alphabet of, I think... 14 characters? Plus three diacritical marks, one of which is only usable in two instances. It's my OCD that drives me to do it: I hate the letter "c". I want a language without useless letters.

French and Chinese, but I really want to go on to learn more. At the moment I've learnt french for nearly 10 years, but of course it's at school so I'm still useless at it , I mean I could probably have a conversation for like five minutes if I'm lucky. Chinese I've only just started but I'm picking it up VERY fast, it's so logical from an English standpoint, I could do Basic conversation in that I think. And Latin which I'm also doing now.......obviously the only practical usage for Latin is Latin to English, not vice-versa, and I'm probably about the same level with that as I am Chinese. Each had their own symbol and often there were only very slight variations between letters, words and phrases. It grew to be over 35,000 characters... then my kids found it and lost several pages. I worked on it for at least 10 years and it was my proudest accomplishment (useless though it was lol). Mine was based on phonics. I had separate vowels for the separate sounds they make thus eliminating the "e" at the end of some words to make the vowel "long". Vowel combinations were done away with as well- the dominant vowel was the only one placed. Every person had their own symbol... But putting the written language into words proved to be impossible. Just like my problems with other REAL languages... only here, I was trying to replace letters and such and then put them back together in a way that unified the whole and was speakable. I even considered including whistles and gestures but the entire thing was WAY over my head. When I was a young teen, it was my dream to teach the language to my children as a unique heirloom. And all of us would have a tattoo on the fatty part of our right palm under the thumb. It was a symbol I created (and have also lost) which represented our family. But each child of mine was to have certain variations in their symbol to pass on to their children. And it was called "Bermayen" because I was also obsessed with the Burmuda Triangle back then Here's some of what I wrote in my code back when it was young: I finally figured out that the first line (in the above picture) says: "My Master, My Lord God" As soon as I recognized it to be part of a prayer journal I stopped trying to decipher it- I was certifiably nuts back then :lol I realized that a letter to letter code would be too easy to crack, which made me evolve it...

English, Urdu, Hindi. Learning French for 6 yrs.; still not fluent but enough to get by. Understand Punjabi perfectly and can speak it pretty good too, can understand Sindi but definitely can't speak it. I want to learn German and Spanish after I become fluent in French.. Swedish would be pretty neat, too.

My 80 something year old Grandpa always talks about the poor quality of European Porn shows and nude beaches. ...He's not a very pleasant man... He also takes belly dancing classes and insists on Practicing even when company is over..............

I speak English and Korean, though I can't write Korean at all. I took Latin for two years in high school, terrible decision. I can speak/write it with some thought, though it's not like anyone speaks it. I'd like to learn Portuguese, because of Brazil, and Mandarin, since there are so many Chinese. No reason other than that. I don't even like China.

"What languages do you speak/ want to speak?" I thought you'd never ask. I speak a wee bit of German and a wee bit of Dutch. Both very similar languages, to each other and to English. (My advice - native English speakers should learn Dutch before learning German; likewise, native German speakers should learn Dutch before learning English. It'd make things a helluva lot easier for both parties.) I took a couple years of Spanish back in high school, so I can read and write pretty well in it, although understanding spoken Spanish is out of the question. I also took a semester of Russian in my first year of college, and am now finishing up with my first year of Japanese. Soon I plan to put Italian on my list of languages to learn. And to hell with Latin. If you're gonna learn a dead language, it oughtta be Old English. 'Tis the shiznit, I do declare. @Zhaylin & Bennington: Holy cow. I thought I was the only language nerd on this forum who made conlangs. I must have at least 12 of them lying around somewhere (all unfinished, though). EDIT: Beautifully designed script, by the way, Zhaylin. My own scripts don't look half as nice. But that could just be because my normal handwriting sucks ass...

In case anyone is interested, (it's OK I know you aren't...) I thought that Romanian was a fantastic language to learn. It's a really neat mix of Latin with Slavic influences and it should come easy to English, Italian, French, or Spanish speakers. Some of the words just really make sense to me either because they came from Latin or they just have the right ring to it. Ex: Woman - Femeie Dog - Câine I want - Vreau Chocolate - Ciocolată We - Noi She - Ea Speak (command), You speak (formal), You all speak (plural). - Spuneţi
