Anything divided by zero is infinity, this 'nullity' is just a different word for it.

Slow news day for bbc, methinks.

Indeed. Nullity? More like blasphemy!
You can't divide by zero. If you still do, well..

everything * 0 = 0

therefore

0 / 0 = everything

Eh no.

5/5 = 1, so 1/5 = 458? Thought not.

o_o

if a * b = c

then c / b = a

or c / a = b

Schoolchildren from Caversham have become the first to learn a brand new theory that dividing by zero is possible using a new number - 'nullity'. But the suggestion has left many mathematicians cold.[/b]
Er what the fuck? 0/0 = undefined.

You can define division in terms of multiplication:

a/b = a * b^-1

1 / 5 (one divided by five) = 1 · 5^-1 (five to the power of minus one)

So

1/ 0 (one divided by zero) = 1 · 0^-1 (zero to the power of minus one)

0^-1 is meaningless, so 1 / 0 is meaningless. Always. And for this reason we say it is undefined.

"Nullity"? What a heap of poop.

Uh. Let's say a is 10, b is 59 and c = 95034.
a * b != c then, is it?

I beat you at maths.

I disagree, for a/b = a² - b.

Duh.

2/2.
2^2 - 2.
4 - 2.
2.

2/2 = 1.

You got 2.

FAIL.

There is nothing you can multiply zero by to get any other number. Zero times infinity is zero. Infinity is not a number any way.

5/0 is not infinity. 0 cannot be multiplied by anything to get 5.

But what I don't understand is why 0/0 is not viable. It seems that it should be "all real numbers" becuase 0 times ANYTHING is 0. Maybe 0/0 is just not a specific number and that's what the problem is.
You are dreaming right now.

Well, for this we will use the very definition of division itself.

How many times does 0 go into 5?

Well, you can take away 0 from five as much as you like, for as long as you like - but no matter what, you will never reach an end, therefore, it equals infinity.

He's correct. 5/0 = undefined. It's meaningless, not infinity.
