Have you ever seen the show? I've never seen any of the 2nd season, but I own the entire first season box set, so I can explain it at least.

Season 1 Main Characters With Powers:

      Claire Bennet: Rapid Cellular Regeneration
      D.L. Hawkins: Phasing/Intangibility
      Isaac Mendez: Precognition (by painting)
Hiro Nakamura: Space-time manipulation (allowing teleportation, time manipulation, and time travel)
      Matt Parkman: Telepathy
      Nathan Petrelli: Flight
Peter Petrelli: Power mimicry that results in multiple acquired abilities
      Micah Sanders: Technopathy
      Niki Sanders: Superhuman Strength
Sylar: Intuitive aptitude; multiple acquired abilities
The Haitian: Memory manipulation, Power negation
      Ted Sprague: Radiation manipulation

Season 1 MAIN Characters Without Powers (or at least known power):
      Ando Masahashi: Hiro's "sidekick"
Angela Petrelli: Peter and Nathan's mother (has a power but no one knows what and it hasn't be revealed yet)
Mohinder Suresh: Genetics professor, he finds all of the "heroes"
Noah Bennet: a.k.a. "HRG" (horn-rimmed glasses), a.k.a. Mr. Bennet

There are way more characters, but those are basically the one's I'd consider main characters.

      Season 1 Plot:

Basically, it's to save the world. All of these people find out they have powers during the season and all of them come together at the end. Claire Bennet, the adopted daughter of Noah Bennet, is really the center of the story. They're trying to protect her from Syler, the bad guy, because if he gets her power he'll be basically invincible. Claire Bennet turns out to be the daughter of Nathan Petrelli, a soon to be congressman. Nathan is Peter's brother. Issac Mendez paints things that happen in the future and his main piece of in season is a bomb exploding in New York, which after they save Claire ends up becoming the center of the story as they all try to stop the bomb. Sylar has the power of seeing how things work, so he goes around cutting off the "heroes" heads and studies their brain to see how they use their power and in turn makes him able to use it. He kills Issac Mendez and uses his power to paint an exploding person, which he believes is supposed to be him. Ted Sprague, the radiation manipulator, is able to cause chain reactions with his hand which can make him set off like a nuclear bomb. Peter Petrelli is able to absorb powers of "heroes" he comes into contact with, and he absorbs Ted's power. The very end of the season they're in Kirby's Plaza where everything takes place. Hiro believes he is destined to kill Sylar in which he stabs Sylar in the chest, Sylar uses his telekinesis to throw Hiro towards a building but Hiro teleports. Sylar made Matt Parkman's bullets he fired from his gun turn around and hit Matt and put him out. Peter and Sylar have a fight before Hiro stabs sylar, Peter sees his hands are glowing like Sprage's and Nathan comes to Peter and flies him off into the sky, and at that point a huge explosion happens and that's the end.

This isn't the entire season, but that's the season in a nutshell. It's a really good show and amazing. I don't know much about the second season, but there are more characters introduced and some of the characters we already know find out more about their abilities and some even find out they're able to do more with them (Matt Parkman is able to manipulate the mind).

Here's the Wikipedia article if you'd like to read more.

Well I've seen a bunch of the episodes but Netflix has them for free if you have instant viewing...heh.

I just want to know why the cheerleader is important.

Well, she's basically invincible unless her brain gets severed from the spine or whatever, and if Sylar would have killed her and taken her power he'd be unstoppable. He was trying to kill Claire the entire time during Heroes and that was his main objective.

Claire can spontaneously regenerate any tissue in her body, allowing her to recover from almost any injury within seconds to minutes, though she does need to have foreign objects, such as a branch or a shard of glass, manually removed from her body and bones pushed back into position for the wounds to heal properly. Various characters in the series imply that having her brain removed would permanently kill her. In addition to simple healing, Claire has been shown to regenerate extremities. In the second season episode "Lizards", she experiments with the limits of her powers, cutting off a toe. A new toe rapidly grows into place. Her blood, when injected into others, temporarily grants them similar powers.

Well.. I suppose that's true, but she saved a lot of lives on the show.

She'll hold some other importance I think to the show. I believe in the second season the heroes get the Shanti Virus which kills their ability (and them also I think), she probably is the cure for it.

"Save the Cheerleader, Save the world." turned out true in the second season.

I bought the box set and watched it, her blood cures a mutated strain of the Shanti Virus on there that was going to eventually wipe out 93% of the world's population.

The second season was good, even though they never got to finish it. You get to see some characters change. The biggest surprise for me was Mohinder, in the first season I liked him, this second season I wanted to see him die half the time.
