      Why would anyone use Shift+Insert instead of Ctrl+V?

      3D rendering of virtual desktops into a cube (or cylinder / sphere with recent versions)

      Take a look at this
      it's a bit old, but shows you the basic functionality
      It's called Compiz Fusion
