      Insomnia. Drugs. Help.

So it's been a while, i can't even remember the last time i was here but i have horrible insomnia. I had it last year, used some melatonin, it work for a while now it has little effect. I went to a psychologist to deal with personal issues in hopes of fixing an underlying issue, that didn't necessarily fix anything but it made me feel good. Then about a month later i didn't have my insomnia.

Now, its back. I've tried everything, no lights in the room, a little light, closed blinds, open blinds, no noise at all, quiet music, quiet TV, and nothing works. It goes from bad to worse to bad. Some nights i don't sleep at all. In the past three nights not counting tonight, i've only got about 3 hours of sleep. And this evening, err last evening, i tried taking a nap for about 4 hours but only got about 45 minutes of "sleep", it wasn't a solid stretch. This insomnia is getting pretty bad, i am actually starting to lose my apatite and that started slightly after the insomnia. I feel drowsie alot but when i try and sleep i can't get to sleep, everyday when i'm at school and work i feel fatigued, but not ready sleep.

Point is that even though i've always been opposed to taking medicine to get to sleep i think i NEED a RX to sleep at this point, if only to help fix my insomnia while looking for an underlying issue.

What medications have people used and liked?
I did some reasearch and i found something called Sonata and i like how it sounds, has anyone used it?

      PS:
I'm always in bed at 11 to 12:30.
I stay there, laying awake for hours, only recently have i actually gotten up to do stuff. Usually i wait until 2am and then i give up on sleep. I need to be awake at around 6:40am to be at school arround 7:25.

I honestly just want one of two things, to get some actual sleep before 12am OR just to find a way and make the time from 2am to 6:40am pass quicker.

      Hi!
I suffer from insommnia too and I am currently detoxing an quitting my sleeping pills. I will try an auyrvedic approach, since I really belive in that. It´s a holistic health system and I suggest you try it. Deepak Chopra has written a great book about how to sleep properly and its full of auyrvedic information.
      Good luck

Have you already tried the usual changes in routine?

Don't spend any time in your room unless you're trying to sleep.
Find a really boring book to read before bed. Something you hate.
Don't eat after 7:00, don't have any coffee, or drink pop after 5:00.
No video games or computer before going to bed
Drink milk, it makes you drowsy
Get into a routine. Do the same things in the same order before sleeping every day
      etc.

You can find more online. I`m sorry if none of these help. They don't work for me, but some might for you. Try all of them at the same time...hope you get some results.

hey there Brother/Sister Nightowl, A collegue insomniac here.

If you'd go to a psychiatrist or doctor they can and will prescribe you the most intense sleep medications. Only these are very heavy, some disturbingly so, and almost all of them are quite toxic and VERY addictive. After seeing the most intense tranquilisers/sleepmedications fail to bring my energy/wakefullness-level down from way up there I was prescribed Midazolam: actually a pre-aneastheaticum before surgery. I take it VERY rarely in emergency cases, because I am aware of how addictive it is. The psychiatrist didn't even warn me that I shouldn't take em dayly or even frequently at all. Good thing I allways do my homework. this Midazolam stuff literally makes you high as a kite and too lazy to even roll over in bed.

At other rare, insomnia emergency cases I have taken a sedative dose of an Antihistamine (cough supressing) syrup named Promethazine (AKA Phenergan in powder form) which has been quite successfull at putting me to sleep. But this too failed sometimes.

However a(physically not legally)safer way of imediate sedation I have found most helpfull is Smoking marijuana and/or Hash before sleep. Where the most bizarre, strong sedatives had no effects at times and just left me awake, a nice fat Cannabis or hash joint or 3 has hardily ever failed to help me sleep.

I bet meditation can aid really good in curing Insomnia, but meditation takes practice and isn't a very practical short term sleep aid for if you really want to sleep RIGHT FUCKING NOW! which, being an Insomniac, is a point I know you will eventually get to after just that bit too long without a proper night's sleep.

Hi, I had terrible insomnia as well. I took valerian and that had no effect. My doctor prescribed 10g of temazepam a night for 7 days. That had no effect either...

You should try intense exercise before bed, and I mean really intense, not just breaking a sweat. Try to get a workout to the point where you're too tired to even think.

'If you only sleep for a little bit, than you haven't been exercising hard enough'

      Give it a shot

I used similar method: physical excercise with following mental ones (solving math). Works pretty fine for me.

I have major problems falling asleep too. The most important thing for me is relaxing and calming my mind. It also really helps to stay very active during the day. Go mountain biking, lift weights, do t'ai chi, just whatever. Cannabis is a sure-fire way for me, but its expensive and illegal. A couple of beers or a few shots of whiskey are the best non-script, non-illicit option if you're going to go that route, IMO.

Try going to bed earlier, that is often the problem.

I also suffer from insomnia, in fact, I take some form of sleep aid every night. The key is to never use the same sleep aid daily. This is how you build a tolerance up to the point where you either wont be able to sleep w/o it and/or it wont affect you as it used to. So you should get a variety of sleep aids and split the use of them. Never use the same sleep aid consecutively in a row.

Here are the different OTC sleep aids I use:
      - 5-HTP 100 mgs (w/ Valerian in it)
      - Melatonin 5 mgs
      - Valerian 20 mgs
      - Anything with Diphenhydramine (Benadryl, Simply Sleep, Tylenol PM, etc.)

Here are the prescription sleep aids I use:
      - Trazadone
      - Promethazine (ran out)

And here are some OTC/prescription sleep aids that I never used but plan to:
      - Ambian
      - L-Tryptophan
      - Alteril (combination of Melatonin, L-Tryptophan, and Valerian)
