I've been taking supplements to help me sleep for a while now.
These include:
Melatonin
5-HTP
Diphenhydramine (used in Benadryl and OTC sleep aids)
Valerian

Anyways, I need something cleared up. If these medicines and herbs are meant to help you sleep and they help me remember my dreams vividly and seem to make me dream more, why do they affect the level of sleep which isn't the deepest? It's my understanding that in the deepest most restful stage of sleep you have no dreams. So do these substances simply help you remember the dream stage more or do they really make it last longer and more intensely?
