I want a new Graphics card

I am looking to play games like Supreme Commander, Warhammer: Mark of Chaos, and Battlefield 2142 on full graphics settings both online and offline. My current card is a ATI Radeon x300 series. Any suggestions as to what would fullfill the high requirements of these games?

Ps. Some sort of budget would be helpful

      *edit*
      well, being serious
the Nvidia 8800 series are the only cards to currently support DX10, which may or may not be the future of games
so, you may want to look at them

I got a BFG GeForce 8800GTX 768MB for my new rig and could not be happier with it. The drivers for Vista were a bit shakey after first but now they are rock solid and I have yet to find a game I cannot run on abolsute max settings.

The card is very pricey however and if you machine is quite old you may want to look at some a bit less powerful as you computer will only run as fast as its slowest component and a card like this might be a waste.

BFG 8800 GTS OC 320MB DDR3 DVI PCI-E Graphics Card
      BFG 8800GTX OC version 768MB 2xDVI GDDR3 PCI-E

Money isn't a problem. I want the best out there.

I will look into these cards you have given me links to. My computer is only about a year and a half old and it is able to play all three of those games I mentioned, but they are really choppy. BF2142 isn't choppy but I feel like I'm missing out on something with the settings at their lowest.

If money is no issue at all I truly would have to say that most of the NVIDIA 8800's are the way to go. The architecture of the 8800 series far surpasses that of the previous 7900 series. I have a BFG 7900GTX and it can still dominate most games, but it really doesn't even pale in comparison to the real power behind NVIDIA's 8000's and such. I believe the 8800 Ultra just came out, that thing will handle it all and then some. Good luck looking around.

I believe the Geforce 8800 GTS 312MB is the fastest one out there for dx10

I'm currently trying to get a 8800GT or GTS

512mb you mean... and it isn't so great anymore, i mean it's good but for like £20 more you can get like double.

get an Radeon HD4870, that thing costs around £180, only like £20 more then the 8800GTS 512mb but its worlds better, better then the 9800GTX, in fact better then the new GTX260 and a lot cheaper.

The only problem i see is that your comp, being only 1.5 years old, isn't very good really. It's not got a dual core processor and it only has 1GB of ram which i assume is only DDR not DDR2 or 3.

See if it has a PCIx16 slot, if not you'll be better off buying a whole new computer. Problem is people buy computers from places like Dell and the like, their not for gaming and they RIP YOU OFF SO MUCH.

Either buy the parts and build it yourself or google custom gaming PCs and use one of those sites that builds them for you, it'll cost around £200( $400) more then if you build it yourself but it;s still a lot cheaper then buying from Dell or Alienware or anything.
Lugggs and cuddles and hugs for all!!

The Geforce 8000 series seems to be quite good; I have 2 mobile ones 8800GTXs in SLI in my new (very powerful) laptop and get very good results. The drivers appear to be much better on Vista than for XP though; I get 60ish FPS in WoW at 1920x1200 at max settings in XP, compared to 80 or so in Vista.

Beware of the power requirements of a new graphics card though, particularly if it's a large upgrade. You don't want to fry your power supply after all.

      what computer games have become.....

      Graphics are blisteringly good
needing a £3,000 machine to fully render said graphics

      Gameplay, mediocre

Enemies have serious trouble navigating up a flight of stairs
and they get stuck in corners

      but the graphics, man !!!11!!

Graphics are the icing on the gameplay cake. If the cake is horrible, all the icing in the world won't make it nice. But a good cake will hold up well even without icing.

This metaphor is making me hungry.

      Nice metaphor

But remember...the cake is a lie.

Which games are you talking about?
I find many games are well worth playing these days without any desire for graphics. EQ was a great game even before luclin models became available. Believe me those graphics sucked bad.

Now I'm moving on to WAR!!! WAAAAAAGH!
