      unblocking myspace

this is a highly over used question everywhere in the world, but with so many people having it blocked it makes sense.

my uncle blocked my myspace account, and i cant find out how he did it. i reset my router, checked the host files in the windows portion of the pc, and checked under internet options... NOTHING says it cant go to myspace.

i will explain what it does:

i type in myspace.com, and it starts to go there. then i get a res://ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm thing in the top part of the page. then it goes to mywebsearch.com and it says it cant find myspace. it of course has a link to myspace in the search page, and when i click it it says that internet explorer cant view the webpage.

anyone have any ideas how to get it unblocked?

my uncle was suppsoed to, but he got taken off somewhere else, and i cant communicate with him as to how he did it...

And i have over used proxys such as www.kproxy.com and those, they just suck and you cant do anything on myspace with them

anyone know how to unblock it forever??

Well, that depends on how it was blocked. I would first open a command line and do something like "ping www.myspace.com" to see if it's some silly browser-level thing (which it almost certainly isn't).

Go into your routers web interface (usually 192.168.0.1 or something - you can figure it out by running ipconfig and looking at the default gateway). The company default user/password combo is usually admin/admin (or admin/<blank> or user/user or something stupid like that). If your uncle knows how to block stuff at the router level, he probably changed the password, too.

why did he block it in the first place?

I was 14 at the time he blocked it, and he forgot and i just starting using this pc again since my other broke down and so now its blocked for me.

And yes i did the router thing, i reset it and everything, but it still has the same problem. and the ping thing isnt right either.

Well, could you provide an nslookup result and a tracert result for myspace?
Also, are you running a firewall?

Run this in the command line:

      nslookup myspace.com
      and
      tracert myspace.com

But if it's not your firewall, then I do suppose it may be the router. I've just never dealt with routers...ever. So I guess I can't be of much help.

You appear to be getting a valid DNS lookup, which means your local HOSTS file isn't overriding anything. The trace does seem to be getting there.

That leaves a port block specific to that domain, doesn't it? Which means it's most likely a firewall thing at some point. Many routers have built-in firewalls, but you said that you did a hard reset on your router already.

Are there any firewalls running on your computer?

you're being directed through a proxy
and the proxy is blocking certain content

there are potential ways around it
but any good proxy service will block these too

you can try a web proxy
      http://www.hidemyass.com/

Edit the address to myspace.com (or whatever) and click the button

Or if behind a proxy goto Tools > options > connections > lan settings and untick the proxy server box.

that's likely (depending on how it was set up in the first place) to knock out all net access

If you phone up your ISP and ask for parental controls, they'll move your account over to their restricted service, and all net access must go through the proxy
no proxy = no access at all

only way around is to fool the proxy (by using another proxy - as above)

You actually have a spyware known as MyWebSearch which is redirecting you to its site. Removal instructions here:

      http://www.safer-networking.com/removeMyWebSearch.php

This is certainly not your uncle's fault.

      Aah, this sounds more likely

use a better browser instead of IE

I have to do this with my laptop sometimes because of the work server, works okay for me, but as you said, depends how it was set up.

Although X has a better explanation.

wow thanks guys, i will look into all of these options

EDIT: ok so i found out a bunch of things. i did the tools lan line thing and im not going through a proxy. i did delete the mywebsearch thing, but now it just goes straight to

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

      Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
      The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

and that happens after i type in myspace.com.

anything else? could it be in the registry.. and should i dig around and find more stuff to undo? the mywebthing was in the registry, really weird.

Just make sure you aren't using IE6. That has had 281 security issues logged compared to Opera's 1 and Firefox's 0. Opera also does not have any unpatched vulnerabilities - Firefox has, and IE7 has some severe ones.

I'd personally recommend you wean yourself off both and start enjoying Opera.

I installed Maxthon the other day. It's shit, but now at least I have 4 browsers installed. Yippee.

EDIT: I also suggest you install Spybot: Search and Destroy (it's free), and run a scan. Since you have had spyware, chances are there might be more. Spybot automatically removes found items. Don't download any other spyware removal tools, other than Spybot or AdAware (never used it but it's legit) as these are often spyware themselves.

No, Safari now comes with the iTunes package for Windows. It doesn't import any settings from IE so whatever your uncle did shouldn't carry over.

ok, if webproxy's work, then it's definitely a proxy blocking you

whether it's your ISP thats running the proxy (parental controls)
or spyware / trojan running you through a proxy (inserting ads, other 3rd party content) - who knows

you could try phoning your ISP and asking them if your account has any parental controls active on it
