Other Operating Systems or Shells?

I've got XP, and it works for me. I've tried Linux and just left confused. OS X is nice, but can get troublesome sometimes.

What are some other lesser known operating systems?

Also, does anyone know about any nice shells? I'm a fan of LiteStep, it's tough to learn at first but can really beautify your computer. I want to check out some other, lesser known shells. I already know of BB4Win and the other BB's, those are nice but not really what i'm looking for.

*BSD
The BSD family of OS's are free, Unix-Like systems descended directly from the Berkeley Software Distribution of UNIX
Very similar operation to Linux
and shares some of the same user-land apps
the *BSD's are famous for their security and stability

BeOS
Early 90's OS that was far ahead of it's time
unfortunately, it never really took off
but OS's to this day pull features and design concepts from BeOS

Plan 9
Developed by Bell Labs (same people that developed UNIX)
and billed as the successor to UNIX
It's a distributed OS
and in that respect, acts similarly to a Linux Beowulf cluster

I also would like elaboration, both OSX and Ubuntu are designed specifically to be user friendly. Is that not the Linux distro that you used?

Some are older operating systems don't have the functionality of OSX, Linux, or XP, but they are more stable.

Windows 3.1
OS/2
NeXtStep (not sure if it will run on a non-NeXt computer)
DOS

I love DOS and Win 3.1. I still use both, the only MS OS's that I use. I know that you can find a DOS clone on the net, I'm not sure of the others.

Oh, another more obscure operating system is called Solaris 10. It's a UNIX based operating system out of Sun. It runs fairly well on Sparc processors, but I've never seen it on a PC or Mac before although there are ports to both. Sun likes to push Java for reasons that I'll never understand so it may run slow on an Intel or PPC processor.

Sure Vista can play Solitaire and access the internet. It's fine for the average person, most people here in the Tech forum though are more than average users (programmers, networkers...) and Vista can't handle that because of design bugs (aggressive page swapping, unmanaged registry, fragmented hard drive, and overlapping DLLs are the big ones.)

Linux was an operating system build by a college professor (I think) in the early 90s. It's open source so lots of people have looked at it and tweaked it to turn it into one of the most stable operating systems out there. At the low level it's very similar to UNIX. Most servers and anything that needs a lot of security uses Linux.

Oh, ok but I don't think my computer has a hard drive, it only has a DVD drive.

it's optional
but you're more than welcome to try it

you need to get something sharp, and etch the letter 'C' onto the disks before ramming the tray home

then you'll have a formatted 'C' drive

(Rolling stones, CREAM, Led Zep, etc.)

Your computer really doesn't have a hard drive? Then that limits you to some Linux Live distro or FreeDos really. All the other OS's require hard drives.
