to get their IP, you need to get them to connect to a server under your control

then just look at the logs

I'm not sure what you're planning to do with the IP.
The only people who can tie an IP to a name / address is the ISP who issued the IP

and short of a court order, that's not going to happen

What I would do is pretty much what Ynot said above, except you don't need your own server to do it.

If you have someone hosting web space for you (or find one that supports PHP and MySQL) you could make a blank web page with a simple script that will get a visitor's IP address and insert into a database so you could view it later on. Send this person a link, hope they click on it, and check your databases to see if any IPs other than your own show up. The only catch is you only want him to go that web page. If others end up going to it as well, you'll get multiple IP addresses, but you could at least trace them and see if any are in your area.

Trick him into sending you an email. The IP shows up in the email header (with hotmail or yahoo, etc you'll have to switch on "full headers" or "advanced headers" or something like that.)I used to like this method.

you'll get the IP of his mail server - not him

plus, all info in email headers are fake-able anyway
(they're not designed to be tracking facilities)

While that is entirely true it doesn't mean that you can't track the approx location. If you are planning to do something like figuring out which part of the country most of your traffic comes from then logging the IP addresses would be useful.

IDing people would be nearly impossible since lots of people will show up with multiple IP addresses. I come to DV on my Mac, Linux PC, multiple school computers, my phone...

All internet forums show everyone's IP to the admin.
