      Laptops for University

Well, I'm needing a laptop soon for Uni. I guess that mostly entails using Microsoft Word and such.

However, I'm also interested in being able to play WoW a bit during breaks if I have no homework.

I was looking at this, a nice ASUS, but I'm not sure if this is out of my price range... My parents are buying the laptop as a graduation present and I don't want to price gouge them. I'll also be receiving my dad's "old" computer because he needs a new one for video editing, so I'll have a decent gaming computer at home after I upgrade some parts.

I'm also a bit turned off by the 6.5 pounds of laptop in there. That could be... heavy. And I don't need a 16" screen... What would be most awesome is if I could just have a screen and use this, but then that might not be convenient either ><

So basically... I don't really need a gaming computer. But then, I'm not sure which brands are reliable. I hear Toshibas are nice. But the thing is... if I spend just around $200 more, I can have a full-fledged gaming laptop O_o

      Recommendations?

And, no, Macs aren't an option; too overpriced.

Actually, now I am also looking at this netbook.

I would mostly use the laptop/netbook to take notes in class and probably work on things during breaks like essays. I'm taking mainly History and German courses, pre-reqs for Education, so nothing too major for programming or anything.

Any new computer you buy will be able to run WoW (possibly netbooks aside).

I'm currently running a Compaq Presario V3000. Not bad specs, fairly cheap, looks nicer than a macbook.

Also Compaq/HP have a really good repairs policy. I called them about this laptop when it was six months over warranty and they sent a courier to pick it up the next day and replaced the motherboard. All for free.

      Disregard that. Get the netbook.
160gb hard drive, 9.5 hours battery life, sexy atom processor. Tis the perfect thing for Uni when you'll often need to be in lectures without a power point available for hours.
On top of that, with those specs it would probably run wow if you turn all the settings down. The tiny screen might be annoying though.

Well I've decided to go with this lovely machine. I tried out some netbooks at the local best buy, and the keyboard's too small for me..

Ha, it'll play WoW, and at only 3x the cost of the netbook

You could get the 1000HE, the best wireless keyboard and mouse on the market, and a 24" monitor for your dorm room, and still not come close.

Still, if mom and dad don't mind springing for the bling, why not?
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

I must tell you that this is replacing my POS desktop right now.. It can hardly run MS Word anymore, it's stupid. Also, it's not only WoW I'll be playing.

Also, I am pitching in as well...
