I been doing a little audio work

I'm new at it, but I've been noticing something. Why does the sound in music become distorted when the volume is increased a great deal? I also noticed this at public places where music is played to a large crowd. The speakers always have that deep bass sound that when your near them your throat tickles and it feels like there's pressure on the chest.
