Vista users with firefox , A question I can't seem to find an answer to!

I recently updated vista and it installed a new addon without my permission on firefox.

It's called Microsoft.net Framework assistant. I researched it and everyone does not want it on their computer. The thing is I can't seem to find out what it does. I read the description but I don't understand. Can anyone shed some light on this, please?

Isn't that used to run things like GCFScape for Source games?

I'm almost positive that's what its used for...

I think you've answered your own question

people don't like it for just that very reason
They don't know what it is, or what it does

They didn't ask for it, they were not warned
but, all of a sudden, MS is installing phantom Firefox extensions on your machine

I'm also almost positive it's nothing harmful, and it's used to run some programs.

Of course it's not harmful *

the point is, it's a forced installation
and many people feel it's unacceptable for MS to silently install things on your computer without any warning or explanation

      * well, not intentionally harmful
MS doesn't have a very good track record with security on the web....

At the time I didn't really pay much attention to it
(not a windows user, not my problem)
I just read the slashdot summary, got a laugh from some of the comments and moved on to more interesting stories

I've actually, now, read up on what this thing does
and if I used windows, I'd find a way to get rid of this pretty damn sharpish

It's a Firefox extension that allows the execution of .NET programs direct from the browser

It's ActiveX with a different name
but now it's attaching itself to non-MS browsers

Most people use Firefox on windows to rid their machines of the security nightmare that is Internet Explorer
and now, thanks to MS, Firefox has been made less secure, by default, for all Windows users

Direct execution of binary code from a web browser is the stupidest thing to ever be devised
I recommend you nuke the extension immediately

      *edit*
It's almost like they're asking for more anti-trust cases to be filed against them
this is really, really retarded, even for MS

Zoinks, I had no clue MS did that. I checked, and it was on my Firefox as well. I've disabled it, and will remove it totally if I can. It's crap like this that makes me hate Windows.
