      iD Gaming Academy

      http://www.internaldrive.com/idga/

My teacher showed me this one day, and I was really excited to learn about it. There are all sorts of things to do!

Game Modeling with Maya Game Programming and Level Design with Unreal Engine 3 are just a few.
      What Will Students Take Home?

      • A copy of Autodesk® Maya® PLE
      • A copy of a popular commercial video game used at the Academy
      • A DVD portfolio created over each 2-week session
      • New skills and confidence in the emerging fields of game development
      • One lucky iD Gaming Academy student each session at each university location will win a PNY Verto GeForce® 9600 Graphics Card! Equipped with NVIDIA SLI® support and Forceware drivers, this 768MB graphics card will deliver lush graphics and stunning detail for your HD movies and games.
      Quick Facts

      • Tuition (includes room, board, activities, instruction) is US $2,999 per two-week session.
      • Weekend stays (optional) cost $325 per weekend and are not included in the program tuition. Weekend stays are recommended - most students enroll in them.
      • Students can register for various courses and multiple sessions for a complete gaming experience.
      • Commercial game studio tour included.
      • An average of 8 students per instructor.
      • Required: A strong desire to pursue a career in or learn more about commercial Game Development or Professional Gaming
      • Space is limited and availability is first-come, first-served. Register today!
The only problem with this is that it's $2,999...
I asked my mom if I could do this, because I thought it was just $325, but when I found out it was $3000, my dreams were crushed

There was going to be one camp near me too...this really sucks!

Uh. Maya PLE is the learning edition of Maya. It's completely useless for gaming because it will only save scenes in the special Maya format. The Maya format is complex and has a lot of information that is completely useless for gaming. Learn how to use Blender or Milkshape.

Would be cool to see iD though, those guys are the masters of the gaming industry. They are always one step ahead of anyone else.

I don't think you have to learn Maya...it's just something they teach. And I'm already learning milkshape.

      Edit: And I can't believe it's $3000...that's a lot of money...

Maya is great software. It's can do everything that Blender can do, but it does it much faster.

Please Blender.org... can we haz adaptive Octrees?

Ninja, does Maya actually do anything better than 3D studio max?

Maya is better for huge scenes, 3DS has problems with large scenes and it's far slower than Maya.

not my area (really not !!)
but Maya was always the big, professional package, with 3D Studio Max being the cheaper, semi-pro option

      Blender was commercial
company went under, and released the source code
Now fully OSS, comparable in features and usability to proprietary competitors

When I did Halo modding, I used Milkshape.

Not entirely true, 3DS Max is actually more expensive than Maya. 3DS Max costs $3,390, while Maya costs $1,999. Blender has been making huge increases in popularity because it's free and has every feature that both Maya and 3DS Max has. A good designer can do anything in Blender that anyone else can do in Maya. It just takes longer to render. This is also true in the professional world. Spiderman 3 was done in Blender, I think that was the first big movie to use it, but I know that there are others in the works.

You're right about the history though, with the exception of: the community actually bought the source code for $100,000. It was not released before they got paid

So what's the advantage of 3D Studio Max? It's the 3D program I use, I've never gotten into Maya or Blender really, but from what you guys are saying, I might have to look into them.

Well, in theory I could've gotten it school-free, but I got it through slightly darker ways.

Anyway, I suppose I should take a look into Maya.

I totally thought this was a forum dedicated to Quake and Doom players.

I think you're confusing them with id software. I don't know of any iD games company.

Wait, now I'm confused. This isn't id, the company that created DOOM and Quake and all of those games?

Well it all depends...what does the iD stand for in the Doom series?

      The iD here is internaldrive.

This is NOT the id that created DOOM and Quake. This is a different company.

      id - Game developers
iD - Whatever the hell this is.

Hope this clears up some confusion.

Oh, then that's not worth going to. If I've never herad of them, they're not a big company

I just checked their website, and it looks like you get to work with Unreal Engine 3.0, but not on a coding level, but rather a mapping level, something that you with complete certainty could learn just as fast from a tutorial on the internet. I wouldn't suggest going to this camp.

Ninja, where did you read that Spiderman 3 was done with Blender? Doesn't say anything about that on Wikipedia, and google didn't really turn anything up either.

      Wikipedia

"As an animatic artist working in the storyboard department of Spider-Man 2, I used Blender's 3D modeling and character animation tools to enhance the storyboards, re-creating sets and props, and putting into motion action and camera moves in 3D space to help make Sam's vision as clear to other departments as possible."
