      Thumbs up motherboard supporting memory types

      So I have a DDR1 type of RAM, and it's too expensive to buy as much of it as I need for an upgrade.

      Supports six memory banks using three 184-pin DDR DIMMs
      Supports up to 3GB PC3200/2700/2100/1600 DDR SDRAMs
      Supports both 64-bit and 128-bit DDR SDRAM
      Note: nForce2 does NOT supports x4 memory device. 1GB can be made by other density of dram chip such as x 8, x16.
      That's from one site I found, does it mean that there's no chance in the world for DDR2 to work with it?

      DDR2 is physically different in size and number of pins, so it won't even fit in your mobo. DDR has 184 pins, while DDR2 has 240. And the quote says nothing about DDR2, just different types of DDR.

      I am also on a system with DDR, and it's annoying when DDR is so much more expensive than DDR2, but you just gotta buy it from the cheaper brands, which is what I did. Check http://newegg.com

      Dang! Our local shops don't seem to have cheap DDR1, but I'll try searching in other places.

      Anyway, the problem could be fixed by buying a new motherboard that supports DDR2. But in this case, is it possible to find a new motherboard that supports an old processor? It's still rather decent, AMD Athlon XP 2700+, and uses Socket A (462), I'm just wondering if I'm getting my hopes too high.

      You might as well just buy a new PC and stick your old hard drive in it if you're going to buy a new mobo, CPU, and RAM.

      Well I was hoping that I can buy a new mobo without having to buy a new CPU... Really, it's silly to buy a new PC if the only bad thing about the old one is the amount of RAM. I hate how everything is interconnected in PCs, how to upgrade one thing you have to upgrade others.

      Yeah, you could try and buy a new one with an old socket, I'm not sure how much luck you'll have, though.
