It's still saying 1% compacting files after at least 30 minutes. :l |

Ouch, that will take a while. Just let it run overnight. Or a few nights. :/ On my old PC I would let it run in the background but it would still take ages even though I wasn't anywhere near your level. |

Hm, it's got 14% done in 2 hours or so now, so yeah, I'll give it half a day or so. |
That looks like an old harddrive, it's probably a little slow. Just give it time |

Time to switch dude. Modern operating systems don't suffer from disk defragmentation. |
Switch to what? (Probably a dangerous question in the techie forum). |
Reinstall your operating system. And if you want to get rid of disk fragmentation switch to Linux. Ubuntu is the best distribution i know of and if you want a more esthetically pleasing look try Kubuntu( a variant of Ubuntu). However you might experience problems with games since you'll have to use an emulator so not all games will work. Hope this helps |
Upgrade to Windows 7, not vista. Windows 7 is not considered a modern operating system either though from a technical standpoint. It still suffers from fragmented hard drives, but not as badly. |
Don't switch to a Linux distro. There is no good reason for everyday computer users like 99.9% of us to use Linux other than the lack of price tag, and I'm willing to bet that your university provides either free or discounted copies of various versions of Windows through the IT/Student Services/whatever-analog department. I made the mistake in high school for a few months before coming back to my senses and realizing that after a full month of tweaks and hacks, I had accomplished reaching about 90% of my original functionality. |
I've had it take anywhere from hours to days. If it takes two days plus- it is time to get a new hard-drive. |

I like Linux but use dual booting |
Download and run this disk defrag program, it's many times better than the inbuilt one. |

It's really difficult to defragment a drive that is as full as that. Defrag needs some room. |
