You're trying to fall asleep - they should be closed. |

The title is pretty self-explanatary. I'm not sure where the question came from, but I've began questioning whether or not I should have my eyes open during a WILD and close them at a certain point, or close them at the start. |

They should obviously be closed, as the user above me has said. |

^What they said, but make sure they are just relaxed, not tense. |

if you can read this then you are about to be punched
Do you keep your eyes open when you go to sleep? I hope not. The key to WILDs is to trick your body into falling asleep. I guarantee you wont do a good job of doing that unless your eyes are closed. |

I have never attempted a WILD, at least consciously, but I often take midday naps on my awesome couch where I basically sit there for a while and then suddenly figure out I am no longer awake. My thing is all you need to do is make sure your body is relaxed and your eyes will close or not close. My mom tells me when I sleep on the couch I almost always have my eyes open, while I am snoring. Eyes closed doesn't matter, if your body thinks they should be closed once you get far enough away from consciousness they will close of their own accord. |

To give a different perspective, there are certain situations in which keeping your eyes open to start would be useful. If you are having trouble relaxing your body, or if you have a tendency to lose consciousness too easily, you might try doing a 5-10 minute relaxation before actually trying to sleep. Basically lie there with your eyes open in the position that you intend to sleep in and just focus on relaxing your body without thinking about sleeping. It will help you get your body closer to sleep while remaining fully conscious. Once you start to feel your eyes get heavy, let them close and at this point your body should be relaxed enough that you can turn all your attention to staying conscious as your body falls asleep. |
