Stress is never a good thing. Just because it's related to REM sleep doesn't mean it helps, it could be like weed and actually reduces it. I know when I'm really stressed I've only had the odd terrifying nightmare.
Also, stress kills and that's also proven.

Scroll down to where it says long term effects. Stress is supposed to be used when you're in danger. In other words it's good in short term but long term stress is a danger.
When your brain senses a threat it diverts energy from things like digestion, amune system, etc, to things that the body needs to get out of danger. Things like muscles and most of your senses are high priority when you're stressed but things you need in the long term ( like an ammune system and digestion) get put on the back-burner until whatever threat is gone.
Threat doesn't have to be physical either, the mind it strange.
