Will Night Terrors disease my attempts to lucid dream?

I was sent here by from a different forum. I was glancing through some of the posts and this state of mind seems very interesting.

However, there is a problem: I have Night Terrors. I am not talking about nightmares where sometimes I'll just wake up in the middle of the night. I am saying Almost everynight, at least two times a night, I get terible Night Terrors. They have gotten more frequent in the past 6 months, and are usually involving insects of some sort.

Will this cause my to panic while I'm learning to lucid dream? I am really afraid to lucid dream solely because of this reason.

Hello sulretal. Welcome to the forum! =^_^=
Everyone here wil be glad to help--trust me

Now with regards to your night-terrors. I am sure you are seeking help with it especially since it sounds very serious. It is considered a sleep disorder (check also the DSM).

Will it affect lucidity. I don't think so. You see, night terrors occur during a phase of deep non-REM sleep usually within an hour after you would go to bed. Lucidity occurs during theREM cycle of sleep.

I say go for it--Go for lucidity. I have read about someone who purposely got into lucidity to actually help combat the night-terrors. In her lucidity, she gained control of her dreams and explored her inner subconscious to learn more of what was causing her her utter fear and panic at night for no apparent reason.

Part of your night may be in terror, but at least the other part where dreams occur may be pleasant. I wish you well with this and keep in mind, many of us here will help you

I haven't received any help with my Night Terrors; didn't think there was a way to stop them. And for me, they usually start after a few hours of sleep, around 2 in the morning I'd say.

What these terrors cause me to do is the most frightening of the ordeal. I usually end up running really fast out of my room, I tend to end up on my living room couch. Or, sometimes I will run to the hallway and scream very loud; this wakes me up fully, and also wakes anyone else up. Half of the time I am too afraid to go back into my room till morning, ffor some odd reason I still believe whatever happened is still there. I visited my Aunt up in the mountains and she said she once saw me jump up from the couch and run straight to her door and run outside. I have never been through anything as horrifying as Night Terrors.

Treatment can consist of seeing a psychologist since night terrors are linked to severe trauma in one's past--abuse, accident, etc. There are also drugs that are available. You should do research on-line. Again check the DSM book. A lot of mental disorders are linked to chemical imbalances or incidents in one's past or present stress, anxiety, trauma. And there can be hope. I am not a doctor, but I have studied psychology and abnormal behavior. Of course, I am not a professional at all. You should seek help for it since it causing such heartache and stress and my heart does go out for you.

      Hi!

I think lucid dreaming may be worth looking into for you. With a little luck, you may be able to overcome this stuff and make it go away. But it DOES sound very serious, and you may need something a bit more 'professional'. Still worth it though =)

      this might help

Hey dude i was wondering the same thing, check out www.nightterrors.org for some great information on night terrors.

i think that because night terrors occur in stage 4 of sleep and not in stage 5 (REM) us night terror sufferers should be ok!

just a thought but i imaging that if u belive your lucid dream will go nasty, it will do just that.

hope i got my facts right there, wouldnt want to look like an idiot in my first post
