How long should a dream journal entry be?

Just a few weeks ago, I had a naturally occurring lucid dream, which lasted about 10 seconds, only long enough to set my cat on fire, slam it into a wall and jump 10 feet. But it left me wanting more, and a few google searches led me to this trove of advice on how to induce them.

The general themes seem to be RC'ing regularly and keeping a dream journal. Plugging my nose and breathing and then biting my arm every hour or so is simple enough, and now, several mutilated Geometry notebooks later, I'm left with a question.

How much paper is consumed by a dream diary? I've got about 2-300 pages left in there, but I'm not sure how much detail to go into when recording. How long are your entries, and how much information do you include?

      Thanks!

Mine are usually about a page long, but really it's however long you feel is nescessary to get all the information and important points down.

By the way, biting your arm probably isn't the best reality check, as you can feel pain in dreams. Try a clock RC, a finger count RC or trying to put your finger through your hand.

It's up to you. You can write in full length of the dream but if you want to shorten on how much you want to write then you can just write key words of the dream.

The more detail the better. Detail is key.

Generally if I write everything I remember in every detail (even small things) I write about 2 on average 3-4 max.

But if you are serious about Lucid Dreaming then you will need to write most/every detail to help improve your recall quick.

I would write just as much notes as I need when I wake in the middle of the night. Then after I get up, I type up the whole dream on the computer where I have a LD folder for all my dream journals. I find that a lot of detail comes back to me as I am typing.

Write it all down. Everything you can remember. If you want to really build on your dream recall I think it's absolutely key to write as much as possible. Most of the time when you think that you can't remember a dream in full detail, you can get a lot more out of your memory than you think initially, by just writing down every tiny detail about it that you do remember.

It can be quite a bit of work, but hey, it's worth the effort in the end

Ah yes, pain is a useless RC, especially if you're focusing on it

As far as a journal... write until you've recorded everything. In my paper journal, I would get writer's cramp writing pages and pages of every detail I could remember. On a computer, I can type infinitely faster and my entries can be anywhere from one paragraph(that's about an average entry of mine) to three pages at 12TimesNewRoman. Then again I'm also very wordy when I write. Still, include any details you can recall, especially if you feel that they're relevant in the slightest. Ultimately, the journal is for YOU so it should suit your time and what you need out of it. If you're finding that your mental recall is good enough that a short paragraph lets you relive the entire dream, more power to you.
