      Photography

Thought you guys might wanna see. I've lived in these places (except Tanzania, Africa) before. They're all quite lovely pictures, especially the ones from Africa.

Almost all were taken by me; others by my boyfriend, friends and even parents.

      Comments and critique are enjoyable.

Geez, that'd be cool to live places like that. I hadn't even heard of a gnu until now

Seems like they were taken with a really good camera too.

This is sooo ironic. It was this really cheap camera my mom (not in any way a techie) bought at random. I never thought the quality was incredible...

I went to Africa with my parents. My mom, who works for the World Health Organisation, had a long meeting to attend in Arusha, Tanzania. I was allowed to tag along. I was able to do volunteer work and even actually attend the WHO meeting. My dad, who had lived in Africa for 3 years (in Tanzania for two) took me on some safari trips where I shot photos.

Way back when I was in grade 7 i went to Africa with my family. We went to Niger and they took loads of pictures. Didn't have a digital camera back then, but I should scan some of those pics and put em up here.

Africa really is a beatiful place.

Those are pretty awesome pictures, I never thought Africa looked like that, I always imagined it as dry and lifeless. Just shows, it's not the camera that counts, it's the photographer. I guess a good photographer can make great picutes with a crappy camera, and a bad one will make crappy pictures with a good camera. With those pictures you are obviously the good photographer.

      Thanks a lot Penguin.

Yeah, Africa always seems to be made out as dry and lifeless, mostly through the media. Sure, like any country or continent, Africa has its problems, but it is truly a wonderful experience to see the wildlife and people.

they are nice pictures. but to me they just seem like the documentation of a trip. so i wouldn't call it 'photography' rather i'd call them nice pictures of stuff.

on a side note, i'd love to go to africa with my camera and many rolls of film but right now i don't have the money. -- but this thought spurs another question... if you had the means to go anywhere, where would you go and what would you shoot?

Even if it is a documentation of a trip, how does this make it not photography?

      Anyway.

I'd go to Egypt if I had the money.. and I'd love to take pictures of everything possible there.

by my definition; photography is the chemical process (in most cases) paired with deliberate and cogent art.

using my definition; those are pictures, not photography.

if i had the funds, time and safety i would go to africa and attempt to capture the civil wars and the tolls on the people ... but since that's not the case i shoot macro around my apartment.

Adidas, you still use a film camera? Taking photos got so much more enjoyable for me after I got my digital camera. You can do so many neat things with a digital photo that isn't possible with film. And if you take a crappy photo - you can just delete it right away and not waste time and money developing them. And it so easy to share photos with people instantly. Wow, this kinda sounds like a commercial...

      well you see...

i do have a digital. i have a nikon coolpix 850 that i use for vacations and family and all that jazz. it works great for point and click but it doesn't work (in my opinion) for artistic compositions.

digital is easy. and, because of that, i think it cheapens the agenda of the photograph. the forethought is gone with (the majority of) digital. i know people who take 300 exposures in an hour with digital... and i know of artists who have had only one exposure left to capture perfection (and have succeeded). i will use digital to shoot weddings and vacations. but i will not use it when i want to put some blood, sweat and tears into my art work.

but that's just me. i'm not holding anyone to my standards. i'm simply stating them.

If that's just your definition and your standards, that's fine. I agree people have spent a lot less time with photography and have not really made an effort with our new and easy technology. However, I'll let you know, that these pictures were taken with precision and care. In my eyes, these pictures are art.
