What is your art of choice

Abstract -- Cubism -- Expressionism -- Fauvism Impressionism -- Pointillism -- Pop Art -- Post impressionism Primitivism -- Realism -- Surrealism OTHER...... I love art. But I must say I favor some more than others. Here is a good description of the different styles ---> HERE "Art is a communication of a state of mind. A work of art exists in it's own write" --> Plato These two promises are the basis of the division of art today into the schools of Realism and Abstraction. These two do not have to be segregated. A work in either idiom can invoke the same state of mind, or it can be visually satisfying without reference to any particular meaning. Art is an experience. Many people view abstract or expressionism as meaningless. Your thoughts....

Expressionism hah it's so funny that you posted that link with examples Howie, because Chagall is one of my favorite artists, and the first artist I thought of when I read your post I love how he often uses a specific color to express an emotion, yet it isn't always obvious, like alot of blue doesn't necessarily mean "sad"

I want to say "realism," but my favorite painter was earlier than that - Dutch master Gerard Ter Borch. I don't see a category for that. I love surrealism too - Dali has been a life-long fav.

Don't really have a favorite, but my favorites are: Surrealism Expressionism Realism Anime/Manga - Not the simple, cartoonish Ranma/One Piece/Pokemon type of art, but the more detailed, streamlined Ninja Scroll/Ghost in the Shell/Princess Mononoke style.

I have next to no knowledge of painting and i've never really explored it, but judging from those descriptions (and looking up a couple of paintings for examples) i'd say the two most favourable for me are Post-Impressionism and Surrealism. But really as long as it's a good painting i'll like it no matter how it's labelled.

I never really approach a piece of art and try to fit it into a genre or class. I've found that it's usually the philosophy behind the art that gives it it's classification and not really what you're looking at visually. There are different styles within each (example, Dali, Miro, and Duhcamp - all surrealists yet their art is distinguishable). For the most part I'm drawn to surrealism. However, it is sometimes clever design and tight techniques which pull me into a piece of work. I'd like to make an "honorable mention" sorta thing for something that may not be a class or type of art - but certainly an interesting medium: Body art! Body art can take the form of tattoos, henna, piercings, ets -- but I find some of the most visually interesting and creative to be of the kind which Trump L'Oeil (fool the eye). This type of work can also be found on buildings, pavement and just about any object - my favorite, hoever, is on the human form.

There are a means and purposes to Genres of coarse but for all intent and purposes the admiration of something is in the eye of the beholder. If one is to truly critique a piece of art the history behind the art and what the artist is trying to convey is relevant. My experience of art seems to depend on my own state of mind in relation to that of the artist. I like different genres/styles/artists at different times in my life according to this. If I can identify with a piece then I'm interested and I keep looking.
