      Belong

I wrote this for Robert for his birthday.

      Belong.mp3

      Lyrics:

      Sometimes a holey philosophy
      Returns to blue
I had hat hair of the heart
But I knew I had to belong to you...

Love was never so far away
As thousands of miles of sea.
      But time goes even longer
For someone like you to find me
So I think that you belong here
      With me.

      Your smile and
      Your face
      Sapphires and roses
And the laughter in your gaze
The way you always move the place too
So that I think that I belong here
      With you.

Elusive as the blue man in the Chagall
Is my native sense of peace
As second chance would have it, you stayed rooted beside me
As a desert flower waits for rain's release

      Your smile and
      Your face
      Sapphires and roses
And the laughter in your gaze
The way you always move the place too
So that I think that I belong here
      With you.

The way you always move the place too
      Ah-
I know that I belong here
      With you.

      That...was... just..... beautiful --

Color me jealous! (of Mr. R)

Seriously, good stuff Opheil. Not just vocally but the instrumental as well - great sense of melody, progressoin and mode changes.

      Favorite parts (minutes into song):
:24-:37 --the way it drops into that diminished or minor sound, opens up, then echoes again
2:12 - 2:25 --nice variation of the previous verses established earlier
3:54 --the way the little riff from chorus "trickles" back in - kinda like saying "hey, wait up for me!"

Wonder what adding some strings might sound like.... hmmmm

Well done, missy - will likely end up on my iPod!

I really like this Ophelia! I got the chills near the end. I just wish your voice was louder, it's quite drowned out by the piano.

You know I was thinking the same thing! I just gotta learn how to arrange for orchestra now.

      Thanks!

Yeah, you should have seen what I have to do with the mic just to be able to hear me at all lol! I have a stack of books on top of the piano, then a big fat pillow, then I set the mic on it and point it to my mouth, and it still pics up too much piano. Guess I should try suspending it or something?

Are you using a high-Impedance mic (more than 600ohms)? Usually, if you have a mic that has a separate cable that attaches to it, (or a 1/4" plug) it's a low-impedence mic (better).

Cheaper mics tend to pick up signals from all directions, where vocal or stage mics only pick up signals from directly in front (eliminating any surrounding signals).

      Tip to try:
Use a sheet of paper (preferrably like a card stock or poster board) and wrap it around the side of the mic in a funnel shape (like the Elizabethan collars that they put on dogs at the vet). You could probably also get away with using a piece of cloth instead.

If you're still getting too much piano, close the opening of the funnel more so it is narrower with the opening pointing straight at your mouth.

      Hope it helps

      Joe I have this one:

It's a really great mic actually, cost like $70. Basically it kicks ass sound wise if I sing into it, but have it NOT resting on the piano. I used it for all my opera, but I'd set it on a stand and sing into it which was fine because I didn't have to play piano for those since I had an accompanist. The trouble I keep running into is when I want to record me singing AND playing piano, getting the balance right. So I will try your dog collar idea.

      Grazie caro

Ah, well there ya go, it is a nice mic - looks like a stereo mic!

I found one that looks identical to yours - is it the Sony ECM-MS907 ?
According to this product description there should be a switch where you can turn off the side "capsules" - which means you won't have to bother with the "collar" rig!

Of course, not sure how much of the piano you'll get if you do turn off the side mics - might have to experiment with that.

      - molto bene, bella!

That's exactly the model I have!

It has this switch sure, but I didn't know what it was for. It says something weird on it like, "180 degrees/90 degrees" like for the angle or something. Never knew it actually had side capsules or whatever. So I'll experiment with it and see what happens.

Thank you so much Joe. What would I ever do without you???? <3 <3 <3
