Nina, women didn't get more beautiful as time passed... the perception of beauty changed. Thus a very attractive girl going into the same time period as where girls who we think are "ugly" are would likely not be sought after, as she would be considered ugly in that time period.

For example, being tan was unattractive until the 1930's.
