      Art museums, Artists/members?

Every vacation that i have gone on I either drag my friends or family to the local art museums in that locality. Now I drag my wife.
It has come so that she enjoys this a lot. So after discussing this with her we would like to go on a mini vacation to visit some of the best museums or galleries in the US. I can't realistically travel from Ohio, where we are from to the east coast then to the west coast so I must focus on a somewhat small area unfortunately.
So given that information, does anyone have an opinion of the best art museum or a range of great museums and galleries?
I was thinking New York for starters.?.

I wonder if anybody or agencies sell packages for something like this.

oh yaa, also realistically this will not be happening for a few years.
Gives me something to look forward too hough.

I dont know of any musems or gallaries, but i am certain that there are agencies that sell packages... i would have to look more into to give you info, but... if like you said, New York is were you might be going, there are alot of gallaries there. Im not too sure if there all that great though.

I hope my posting this was helpful... /=

Thanks KeavyODonagh for your reply. A package deal would be ideal. That would be so cool. I'm certainly not dead set on New York. That is just what had come to mind as I searched for galleries. I would rather take in 5-10 good museums than one great one. One issue is that I hate the city. I'll get over it. haha

The NSW Art Gallery, in Australia.
      The Tate Modern, in London.

Hah, if you're going to an art gallery, may as well do it properly!

I have no informed opinion on this matter, but love the few art museums I've seen (still haven't been to the Cleveland museum--they've been renovating since before I got here), but I hope you've been to Toledo; they have a surprisingly good art museum I had the privilege of visiting a number of times while attending college near there.
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

I can't wait until that expansion is finished.
I received a letter saying that we have a new associate director. Cindy Kellette. We will see how that goes.

No. I have not been to The Toledo's art museum. Looks like I should add it to my list.

The Met in New York is free to the public and has a lot of interesting stuff.

I don't know if you're still planning this. If you are, I would decide what kind of art you would most like to see, and then find which museums have the best collections.

Off the top of my head, I would suggest Washington DC or New York.

Yes I am certainly planning to still go at some point.
I personally am addicted to abstract art and expressionism, my wife doesn't have the enthusiasm towards more modern art as I do. I don't think it will be too difficult to find a balance as most good museum seem to already have that balance.

I was hoping to here some first hand individual accounts on particular museums.
I'm with you Robot_Butler. having done some searching here and there It seems those two our at the top of the list.
      Thanks

      Hey Howie,

A good place to start is checking out department of tourism for the states you want to visit - they usually have the links to all the attractions including museums. This is the link to the New York site (museum section)

For local museums, try the Ohio Museums Association (you can search by region or type of museum.)

Yah, but they're still open and having shows. I think there's an armor exhibit currently going on. That's in addition to the kick ass collection we already have!

I just put my friend up for two weeks while she started a job at the Rock Hall--I see free passes in my future

We went last wednesday for a free live interview with Matt Pinnfield, which was pretty sweet--he's a very energetic guy who's been deep in the rock world for a couple of decades.

Heh, nice! I was at opening night (worked with the catering company). I was setting up in the VIP tent where I was SUPPOSED to be serving - but some dumbasses that were working inside at an hord'ouerves station were falling behind, so I was switched to get them back on track. I later heard from two NEW people that Chrissy Hinde and the Pretenders were at the table I would have been serving!!

I've only been back once, many years ago. I would think it's much better now (it really wasn't all that great back then )

I've only been there once and didn't see much of the collection, but what I saw did seem pretty lame. Their programs seem more worthwhile than the museum aspect (Matt Pinnfield was very cool). Still, just a lot of the photos in random places were fascinating, and I've heard the John Lennon exhibit years ago was awesome.

My friend teaches the history of rock, mostly to junior high and high school tour groups, and it's strange to think about, but a lot of these kids don't know this stuff--they have no context for the culture in front of them.

I'd recommend the Met as well. Great museum.

I also have a question, what kind of museums do you like? Because we have a lot here in NY, many different types I mean.

I'm a huge fan of abstract expressionism, pure forms of abstract and the like.
      Just love it!!!
