      Texture making!

I was bored so I decided to make this texture today...I also made a bumpmap for it for in-game use.

When I put it in-game, I already saw the problem with it. It's way to dark on one side, but I can easily fix that, so no problem.

Tell me what you think! Everything was done from scratch except that I used a concrete base texture.

Nice, very good job. I was thinking tarnished metal, but I suppose it could easily work for concrete.

The watermarking adds a nice bit of realism, too.

Oooh metal...I'll probably do a quick add metal texture to see how it looks.

Is it bump mapped or specular mapped? Show a screenshot

I'll take a screenshot of it in game when I get the chance.

Isn't bump-mapping where the texture looks 3D, but really isn't?

How do I make a specular map?

Also, if anyone wants it, don't be afraid to ask!

Edit: I'll also have to get rid of those stains and re-do them so their a lot smaller. They don't look good when they repeat themselves :/

Well first, what the heck software are you using!? Awesome Blender 3D? Crappy shitty anim8or? Maya? Lightwave? Rhino? zSculpt? 3ds? Blender 3D? Crappy Wings 3D? Crappy Art of Illusion? Blender? Crappy Truespace? Blender?
btw, Blender is the best one up there XD.
I know a whole shitload of stuff about UV maps, textures, seams, modeling, game logic bricks, rigging, animating, whatever the heck in Blender.

And someone go post something interesting, this is the first update in a while.

I like the brick one better, the metal one looks less realistic.

      Photoshop, Crazybump, and VTFedit.

I'm still learning bumpmapping and stuff. I just tried doing speculation or whatever and it didn't turn out the way I wanted...so I'm going to re-do it all.

Edit: New metal texture I will be working with.

Bump mapping is a greyscale (or sometimes colour) image that is separate from your texture. It tells the engine that renders the texture which direction the normals are facing.

To make a specular map, take the shiny places and make them white, take the dull places and make them black and the in between places are some shade of grey. For that metallic texture, most of it should be white, the only grey spots should be where it is scratched, painted, or rusted.

Specular tells which places should be shiny.

Bumpmapping control how light acts on the texture, like if you have a flat object, but it's actually got a texture on it of rocks, then if you go around it with a flash slight, the shadow change in the texture.

Parallax mapping/displacement mapping is where it actually looks like 3D, but isn't. You can see it in games like FEAR and some UE3.0 games. It's not available in any Source builds. It looks absolutely amazing, and it's kinda like a super-version of bump mapping.

      How's this?

I think it's turning out great! It may be a little too shiny though...

I'm also going to have to fix the bump mapping on it or whatever...it's not standing out as much as I'd like it too.

Edit: @Marvo: Actually, I think someone did get parallax mapping in Source. It was pretty cool. But yeah, I don't think Valve has ever used it in any of their games.

I think it looks good, but give it a nice silverish dull glow, it will make it look more like metal.

I don't think I can give it a dull silverish glow without changing the actual light source...
I lowered the glow of the texture and changed the color of the light to a blueish color.

The light looks green because it's so close to the orange wall, and you can see the reflection of it at the bottom of the screen, instead the entire texture being reflected.

I think you should use displacement to have the hinges (or whatever) stand out a bit more.
And crazy bump looks awesome! I gotta recommend it to the game team i'm working with!

Well, Crazy Bump isn't completely free and big bucks, so this one is better: http://www.shadermap.renderingsystems.com/.
Or for free you can desaturate and mess with the levels for a spec map, dicplacement map, and ao map, (also use a light-ish gaussian blur for the displacement map, orit will be crazy) then use this plugin for the normal map: http://nifelheim.dyndns.org/~cocidius/normalmap/. Then go over to image>adjustments>shadow and highlights and mess with the settings for the diffusion map. Trust me, this works too,I tried it, but the program is better and faster.

Crazy Bump is good enough for me...

I don't know what benefits you get out of it for paying for it...
