A few scribbles with my new digital pen

      So I got this:

It was in the mail today, so I hooked it up to my laptop and I started scribbling. It takes some getting used to, but now I use it all the time instead of a mouse.

Here are some of the not-so-terrible results.

      A flower garden

      A sleeping frog-ish thing

A cyclops girl with flowers in her hair

I have one of those. It's awful for drawing, or at least I haven;t yet been able to fine-tune it to the most comfortable distance setting, but it's almost as good as a $50 gaming mouse, with thrice the functionality.

Yeh well I went straight to Intuous A4 board. But well there is huge difference in price so Bamboo is good if you are not yet really sure do you wanna use it

It takes some while to get accustomed though. I suggest putting paper on the tablet so it is more like natural drawing.

I find that mouse breaks more my wrist than pen. I did mousework sometimes, but yeh, I love pen more

I just found my old draw tablet thing, and while I can get used to it, it's also very small and got bad detection and DPI. Drawing with it is fun, but it doesn't turn out as good as something I do with my mouse and different tools.

Yeh well drawing amongs many other things is pretty much equipment driven. Even if you are professional artist and you are given bad tools, you can make pretty thing but you can't make masterpieces.

I am pretty happy with mine, maybe someday when I have gotten more skill, I have guts to by Cintiq....

...wah...? Obviously you aren't a professional artist. Any real artist can make art no matter what tools they have at their disposal.

They can make art, yes, but tools are essential for artists. Same for music. Even a guitarist who plays for himself can make his average playing sound a lot professional if he had the gears which professional musicians have.

I am not saying it wouldn't be the skill, but equipment affects. Any self-aware artists knows that.

I think you underestimate what can be done with the simplest of tools.

I'd like to turn your attention to

      exhibit A

      exhibit B

      exhibit C

This last one, I must admit I don't know what tools were used, but I do know that the art of stone carving has changed little for thousands of years and still uses some of the most basic tools (hammer and chisel) in existence.

I know what can be achieved with simple tools, yes. I have done most of my life with "suckiest" tools( cheap amps, cheap nibs, bad mics). I am not denying it, there are many forms of art. But if you wanna give a professional guitarist 300 euros electric guitar and tiny amp, he won't get good sound of it. His fingerwork, his playing, his experience, the passion he puts to it is as good as normal, but sound. No way. This is what I was talking about.

But for example calligraphy and concept art are two very different things, so are stone carving and oil painting. but as long as we talk about "art", yes you can do art with glue and metal pieces.

But I was mainly refering to digital media because I believe it was what this thread was all about

Yes. And my original shock was from thinking that I've seen amazing work done with a mouse that blows a lot of tablet work I've seen out of the water.

A tablet may make a mediocre artist's work look more professional, but all it will do for a real artist is save time.

Indeed, this was my point. Also, I don't like the idea of working with mouse. I want it to be more flowing, more pen paper like it is just personal preference if its mouse or tablet.

But the idea in equipment is really, that if this mediocre artists gets to try professional tools ( like I did when I played guitar) he understands that he isn't that sucky actually. When I got chance to try the guitar of one Finnish band guitarists, along with all the other goods, I actually reconsidered to begin train HC in order to be professional guitarist. Well that never happened, but the core idea still

Of course you can do art with simple tools. That is what art is like. But art has many forms and some of them are even more tool and equipment dependand. Sketcher can sketch with pen only but 3d artist needs all his tools to be effective and good. Still, their works can be considered as good in the eyes of art

A tablet may make a mediocre artist's work look more professional, but all it will do for a real artist is save time.
Example: Drawing, pixel by pixel with a mouse, the same picture you drew in paint (pigment mixed in liquid, not mspaint). You can get more detail, and even simulate the brush strokes. On the other hand, it's far easier just to draw it out (sketching woth the pen tablet) and then adjust the little details.

This is one reason I like my drawing tablet, even though it's one of the bamboo tablets rather than a nice one with a built-in screen. Because while it's possible to do something by mouse, it's usually easier for me to make it look right by pen and then make it look good by mouse. (this may change as the tablet gets more use)

I love using tablet because my style resembles very much oil painting even if its digital. also digital area enables you do all kinds of drawing without need to have many real life tools ( palet knives, different oils etc)
