      OpheliaBlue's Tunes

[edit] Can pretty much screw all the links in these posts, that blog is gone forever. My crap is here now:
      http://www.myspace.com/lisagray [/edit]

I'm tired of making a new post everytime I have a new tune, so I thought I'd do like all you others and compile them all in one place. I'll post complete songs, WIPs, progress, whatever I feel like sharing. Listen and critique at will. Thanks

September 11, 2006: "One, Two, Three, My Lover Went to the Sea" mp3 | lyrics
      - I kinda screwed up the guitar and the ending, but the basic idea is there. It's about a crazy girl who's boyfriend tries to off himself, and she's so barmy that she believes he's coming right back even though he's in a coma. *Now new and improved, with ocean sounds!*

      September 7, 2006: "Addiction" mp3 | lyrics
      - Some of the effects I added aren't really smooth, so forgive please. I either need to use different software or learn to use what I have better heh. Anyway, written for my mom explanation.

August 18, 2006: "Si mes vers avaient des ailes" mp3 | lyrics & English translation
      - This is that one where I took a 19th century french poem and set it to music. Lyrics by Victor Hugo.

      August 4, 2006: "Without Voice" mp3
      - Recorded this on a Steinway in a symphony hall. Instrumental.

July 27, 2006: "Mad World" cover, part deux mp3
      - Added a track with harmony, and adjusted the flangers a bit. Still a little rough around the edges and some static, but getting closer to what I want. Oh and I sing out more so you can hear my voice better.

      July 20, 2006: "Lucky Love" BETA mp3 | lyrics
      - Gave it a new intro, added a bridge and a verse. Lots of mistakes and background noise.

      June 26, 2006: "Love Theme" mp3
      - I was looking at this picture (by glassbreaker) and the music just entered my brain so I wanted to share it. It's just piano, no lyrics.

      June 6, 2006: "Mad World" cover mp3
      - I heard this melancholy song on a friend's myspace, and I recognized it right away, though I had to search a bit to find out where I had heard it before. Anyway, it's "Mad World" by Gary Jules, and was featured in the movie "Donnie Darko". It's such a cathartic, self indulgent piece to play (especially for all us suicidal emos lol), that I just had to do a cover of it. The music is so simple, it's almost comical, yet in 100 years I could never write something so perfect. I bumped it up a 4th since I'm a chic, and tried to add the flangers to it the best I could with the free software I have.

      May 5, 2006: "Metastasize" mp3 | lyrics
      - another collaboration of me and bathos, he wrote the lyrics, I did the rest. This is the first time recording all the way through so I fucked up the guitar alot, and the mic was too close to the guitar, but other than that I like where it's going.

I'm not sure if it was you screwing up the guitar at the beginning, but the "wob wah" warbly noise is nice. Your voice is taunting the way it crescendoes. I am waiting for it to burst open and explode, but it does not, it's tormenting in a way. Your voice also sounds like one I have heard before, and towards the end of the song a put a finger on it. Your voice sounds like Shirley Manson, the female vocalist from Garbage. More specifically, it sounds like her singing part of Radiohead's Paranoid Andriod. You say "swell" twice, Thom Yorke says "Rain down, come on rain down". All around very nice.

Thank you very much pj and Clone

Yeah the "wob wah warbly noise" was intentional. I use this program called "goldwave" to get songs of my minidisc, and to add echos or reverbs or fade outs, trim away my clearing-of-throat just before I sing, crap like that . Then yesterday I was playing around with all the different effects in the program and there was this one called "flanger", and I selected the "slow, slight flanger." I liked how it made it kinda sound under waterish so I kept it. It was either that one or the "through the skull" flanger (but that one was a little too weird heh).

Oh my boyfriend says I sound like Shirley Manson also . And I kinda remember Paranoid Android (mainly from the cool video), but I can't really remember how it went so I'm gonna go get it and listen to it again. I always loved Radiohead when I was in college, what an interesting and creative group with beautiful vocals.

i really like all of them. thank you for posting them.

i especially love the chords/harmonies in "what would i do" and "belong" melts me everytime i hear it, and the hauntingness and complexity of "metastasize" is very intriguing.

      please write/post more

      thanks scruffty and Faithless

I reworked "Don't You Feel Lucky When You're Loved." It just always bothered me that I had a nice idea for a song but only gave it 2 verses, so I gave it an intro with recorder (I can't tell if it's cute or cheesy yet), a bridge and an additional verse. Chris was hollerin in the background alot so just ignore that, and I made some errors so this is still a BETA version.

      so bumpity doodle dooooooooooooooooooo:

      LuckyLoveBETA mp3

      lyrics:

Now's the time for letting go
You've lived this long but got nothing to show
      'Cause you lost your way
Here we are, you've got it now
      You found love
      You found love

Don't you feel lucky when you're loved
      When you're loved, loved loved?
      Nothing else is reminiscent of
Being loved, loved, loved, loved, loved

There was a time, the fateful hour
The seed was sown, but where's the flower
      You never knew
      Another seed, another day
      You won't go
      It won't grow

Don't you feel lucky when you're loved
      When you're loved, loved loved?
      Nothing else is reminiscent of
Being loved, loved, loved, loved, loved

      It's as wrong to belong
To a flower as a song
      A frivilous swim
      Is true love's whim
      Jump in.

So be good to the lives you share
They're free and freedom takes you where
      You've longed to be
A joyful wind for innocent sails
      May love prevail
      May love prevail!

Don't you feel lucky when you're loved
      When you're loved, loved loved?
      Nothing else is reminiscent of
      Being loved

Don't you feel lucky when you're loved
      When you're loved?
      Nothing else is reminiscent of
Being la la la la la la la la la la la la la...

The flute/whistle intro, whatever instrument it is, sounds nice. Of course, it reminds me of two songs, and I can't pick out the second one. The first one is The Beatles - "With a Little Help (from my friends)", the other sounds like...actually it might be Harry Chapin - "Cat's in the Cradle".
Edit: no, it was David Bowie's "Piano Man" I was thinking of instead of Harry Chapin.

I am really digging how your voice has a natural echo to it. Especially when you sing a song that conveys a somber emotion, like Lucky Love.

I got to record this in a nice symphony hall on a freakin HUGE Steinway grand piano. I wrote it a while back to go with this poem, then I decided I liked the music without the words to it. I titled it "Without Voice" not because of that but because it's a line from the poem. "And without voice, I still can call to thee"

I wrote it per request of a friend who likes that author alot. Unfortunately I may no longer talk to this friend, but I still can call with song.

      ehhh, it's my end

I turn off the server at night because, for the time being, while the office is being refloored, the linux box is in our bedroom, and we can't sleep because it makes weird noises sometimes

so it's off usually between the hours of 10pm and 8am CST until the other room is finished, sorry about that

no worries, i can't sleep unless it's COMPLETELY quiet.

luckylove. nice bridge. very solid song.

madworld is very good as well...it's self-indulgent to play, but oh so satisfying

it IS maddening how some of the best songs are so simple, eh? but then, encouraging too, because it gives any fledgling songwriter hope that they'll hit on just the right combination one day.

also, the song on the grand piano has its noteworthy ( har har) moments. fuck, grands are so awesome. only played one a few times, and its like the difference between playing a ukelele, or a handcrafted acoustic.

how long have you played piano for? have you taken formal lessons?

      keep on writing/playing

oh yeah, totally...and alot of the time, it's not one that the artist thought was their best that ends up being their best...such a random shot in the dark really

how long have you played piano for? have you taken formal lessons?[/b]
I took piano lessons when I was 5, you know the old fashioned classical way with the old lady at her smelly old house, then I was allowed to quit when I started marching band...basically it was ok if I just 'swapped instruments' as my mom put it. Then I quit the horn in college to sing opera, and a couple years ago I kinda retaught myself piano (after not playing for nearly 10 years&#33 out of necessity to teach my voice students, and I decided to learn more popular styles. Because let's face it, alot of the time, popular stuff is more fun than classical.

yeah, "stabs in the dark" probably capture the freshest creativity it seems..

and i went to a smelly old ladies house as well. for a year or two when i was around 11. she didn't teach me much, and i hated the songs and the lessons. my dad forced me to go (because he was shelling out the money to teach me something he always wanted to do on an instrument my mom paid for, but still hasn't learned to play).

all i remember is the woman (who could play classical music beautifully) would grab my hands almost every session like they were treasures and say "oh, these are the hands of a piano player" with almost breathless rapture.

      haha, she creeped me out.

her husband only made an appearance every dozen or so visits, always looking like he'd just gotten up, at 4 in the afternoon, in a bathrobe half draped open. he painted supposedly.
