Just curious about high quality models and why they're better/just as good.

I've seen a lot of models like the ipod, such as the iRiver, which includes FM tuner and the dell audio player, which I've seen and is quite durable.

I have got a Phillips Blabla wanna-be-iPodnano. It works great, and it is bad-ass-black with blue buttons. It arn't actually buttons, it is just like a piece of plastic with lights in it that work like a touch screen.

Anyone seen the new cowon d2? I'm getting one next payday to replace an old iriver h340 with appalling battery life. The d2 has over 40hrs playback! It's only 4gig flash memory, but it has a SD expansion slot (up to 4gig?). But latest test firmwares have SDHC support, and I think those cards go up to 32gig. As far as sound quality goes, I'll let you know in 2 weeks. But cowon/iaudio has always had very good sound quality.

Youtube has some good reviews up. link

I personally have an iPod 60gig video (which I got as a gift ), but an alternative I have seen that looks pretty nice is the Archos. I believe they play videos and songs, and some of them have other cool features like a built in video cam (depending on the model). I think they have 30gig and up versions (though there may also be an 8 gig or something version, I don't remember).

My bad-ass philips mofo can store 2 gig, has really good sound quality as far as i notice. Also, I dropped it HARD on the street yesterday while it was playing, and it still worked.

And it is black, black is bad-ass.

      BUYBUYBUY.

Or just get an Ipod, be lame.

I am sure there are better price/quality stuff, but... I don't know what. All I know that black is bad-ass, did I say that yet?

Shiney black gets finger smudges, these are not cool.

As or alternatives, Philips ones do have very good quality sound, though as with any brand, fail to look as good as iPods. I'd love to find one from another company that doesn't look bulky/tacky.

Actually, I think iPods look lame. Matter of taste I guess.

Get an iAudio - X5. It's far better than an iPod, a lot more reliable. i had one and i was REALLY happy with it; until i dropped it into water.....

      Don't get an iPod.

      Get an [topic="http://www.apple.com/iphone/"]iPhone[/topic]!

Seriously though... I can't wait till I need to change out my phone a year or two from now. Those [topic="http://www.apple.com/iphone/"]iPhones[/topic] are the shiznitz!

As a shuffle alternative, I have a Transend T.Sonic 310. The 512mb version, but they have bigger ones.
It's a lot cheaper, and does the same trick
And it seems to be pretty durable

      Uh...no.
      Seriously.
I was on the iPhone bandwagon once. Having a phone that played music, stored my massive song library, browsed the internet, and all that? Plus it just looked snazzy.
But when it comes down to it...
Well, the iPod revolutionized mp3 players. It was years ahead of it's time.
The iPhone is the iPod's counter--years BEHIND its time.

A quick comic outlining the iPhone vs. Smartphones.

And all this is about getting a music player, not a $5-600 phone that has music capabilities added on as an afterthought.

Okay, i have an XM RADIO Pioneer Inno. That beast is crazy. You can record about 600 songs off the radio and put 600 of your own songs on it also. <3 it.
