      Tell me about photoshop!!

I tried using the thing for the first time today and was so bloody lost. Everytime I try to use the "info" thing, the program crashes. I haven't the slightest clue how to properly use most of that stuff. I was messing around with it for a while today but only figured out how to write stuff, and how to make the colours brighter. That's about it.

How do I use the damn thing?

Did you pirate it, young man? Because if so, we can not help you.

What you mean by the "info" thing? You mean the "Help" section? That's usually launched in a web browser - try launching the browser first, THEN choosing Help.

Also, sometimes programs allow you to customize the installation. Most people (like me) will choose NOT to install the help because it takes up too much space. Did you maybe not install the help files?

Or maybe he pirated it, and the help was left out because it takes too much space. Same with MSDN (Microsoft coders library, a huge help file, so to say) - It's not included in most pirated releases of MS Visual Studio.

Info as in Window -> Info? That just gives you info on the current entity.

Are you mistaking Photoshop for it's free alternative GIMP?

The Window menu gives you most of the toolbars and windows that you need to editing. Find a combination that you like and then save your workspace (under the Window menu again.)

Maybe you are trying to access a plug-in that you don't have.

You might want to ask this in the Tech Forum instead.

Buy the Classroom in a Book for it. That's what I had to do, enough to learn the basics and build on that.

Not sure about the program crashing though, sorry.

It really depends on what you are trying to do.

I could help you with just about anything because I have years of professional experience with it, plus gone to several seminars.

      Seminars on photoshop? Wow.

Or maybe he pirated it, and the help was left out because it takes too much space. Same with MSDN (Microsoft coders library, a huge help file, so to say) - It's not included in most pirated releases of MS Visual Studio.
Why automatically assume I pirated it? Ffs. You can stop suggesting that I pirated it. I didn't. This is my mom's old computer, and she bought it, and probably didn't include the help things. I don't live with her, and I doubt she still has the disks.

What doe you mean what do I want to do? Change the appearance of photos of course I just don't have the slightest clue what to do with it. As far as what program it is, no I'm not mistaking it for something else, it says very clearly "Adobe Photoshop" when I open it. I don't know if Adobe is a different type than "regular" photoshop or what. I just don't know where to start with it.

Photoshop has so many uses, photo manupulation, touching up photos, enhancing and changing etc.

Are you just enhancing photos you have taken? Or actually changing things in the photo's? If you give us an example of what you want to do we can help better.

i.e I have a picture of a car and I want to change the wheels/colour/background etc. Or a picture of a person and want to make it better

Old computer? What version of Photoshop?

Simply enhancing photos is easy. Image -> Adjustments -> Autolevels

Ninja, there are many better ways to enhance a photo than that.

Personally, the way I learned (and now I'm really experienced with photoshop) is by going through and doing a LOT of the lame tutorials. There are millions of lame tutorials that make some cheap effect (or cool effect, whichever) but it helps you learn a lot what different things do.

Obviously, but for most photos that's all I really ever need.

You aren't trying to do anything professionally or intense, just type "photoshop tutorials" into google or something, that should keep you busy. But if you ever have a "How do I make it look like this?" question I could help.

Well like just basic things like bluring things out, or changing people's eye colour, etc. Just idunno basic editing. I don't really have any particular specifics at the moment.

Just experiment with it, familiarize yourself with the GUI. It helps a lot to just fiddle around. Back when I had it, that's what I did, and I got pretty good. I took several cars out of a picture for my brother.

Unfortunately, I lost it when I had to format the HDD on the old computer. So now I use the GIMP. Which is free, and rocks, IMO.

      just google for photoshop tutorials
      (there's tons)

start with basic / easy stuff
      work onto more advanced things
before you know it, you'll be using tutorials for reference only

Can anyone tell me how to Paste something as a new image? It seems a basic question but I've googled it to no avail.

I'm basically asking is there an option to "Paste as new image" rather than having to go to File- New-... etc.

New question: How do I flip layers? So far all I've found is "Flip canvas horizontally".

What does this mean "flip layers." You mean, on an invidual layer, flip the picture horizontally or vertically? Or change the order of layers?
