When the first pilgrims came over to America in the 1600's they held a feast out of gratitude for the indians who helped them survive their first year. Supposedly it lasted three days and there was a ton of partying and dancing and good times all around! Of course now it's a bit toned down but we still get to have a super awesome dinner the 4th Thursday in Novemeber.

Yep, Qwin pretty much covered the basics. Now it's about family getting together and celebrating what they are thankful for in life. It's also about eating as much good food as possible and watching football

It's a national holiday. Pretty much everyone has work off that Thursday, and also the Friday after Thanksgiving. Unless you're me, and you still have to go to work to give all the boarding cats their medications.

oh yeah, it certainly is. The biggest bar night of the entire year is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. They say its so everyone can get drunk before having to deal with their crazy families for the rest of the holidays, LOL

You get out of school (HECK YES!!!)
Go with your family to see more family and/or friends
Eat lots and lots of food (Some of it is...interesting)
Eat more desserts than you had food
Get all sleepy from the turkey
Play board games (the adults are funny because they are tipsy/drunk)
Leave early and camp out in front of your store for Black Friday
Stay up all night in the freezing weather, outside
Stand in line at six AM and force your way into the store to purchase gifts
      Go home
      Sleep all day
      Somewhere weakness is our strength
      I'll die searching for it...
      I believe that there's hope

it's thanking the indians for giving us all their land or maybe
english settlers were having a terrible time in the new world and the indians showed them how to grow indigenous crops, make lots of use of corn, squash, etc
I play broccoli with checkers every night.

believe it or not, thanksgiving comes exactly once a year! dare we make a topic about it... once a year? no. that wouldn't be proper forum decorum.

You Americans and other persons of various nationality are lazy.

We English have virtually nil public holidays. We have three bank holidays (which more and more commonly you work anyhow), Christmas, Boxing day (that is, the day after Christmas), New Years, and a 4-day weekend at Easter.

No arbitrary giving of thanks, not anything. Since the Romans at least, we were never really dependent so no Independance Day either.

Wow, you guys don`t have some form of a "Rememberance Day"? I would think the UK is the country that needs it the most...

      And yes, it`s today.

yeah, thanksgiving in the US is so huge...its, like bigger than christmas. In canada we have it in October, and it isnt to celebrate that whole pilgrim indian story. for us, it really isnt as big. we get the day off, eat thanksgiving dinner with our families, then go to school and work on the following thursday. its more like a meal to look forward to than a holiday.

wow, whats your deal? you know America has a lot of really pointless holidays, like, what the hell is with arbor day? celebrate trees? give me a break, stop acting like youre so much better.

hmm I don't know about that. Christmas is pretty huge. Thanksgiving is like the kickoff to the entire holiday season which is preparing for and buying gifts for Christmas, and the holidays wind down through the New Year. Then its back to work for the year to come! (to pay off the Christmas debt)

It seems like Christmas gets more commercialized every year. I'm not going overboard this year... it's the thought that counts, right?
