Tell Me About Being A Student In Japan

What's the average day in the life of a Japanese student? The daily routines, the way school works, average afternoons, and generally what it's like to be a minor in Japan.

I live in Japan, and anime isn't a fair portrayal of reality in ANY way. Sorry to burst any bubbles...

Kids generally work their asses off after school and go to Juku (cram school), or do some required club activity after their required group cleaning of the campus grounds.

It's definitely not a fun life compared to the ease of american schools... teaches them more discipline, though.

This is one of the reasons why I made this thread. I know that anime doesn't portray living in Japan correctly. I'd rather want a correct representation of what being a student over there is like from someone who's actually been there. Links to sites that have such information in detail would be nice as well.

Yeah, I hear at some schools, students take turns cleaning classrooms after school. Doesn't only teach them discipline, but dedication to their work which I guess would explain all the great technology we have today, because employees put a lot of pride in their work unlike us Americans, we just want to go home.

But I don't live in Japan, so I'm not certain.
