      Prah-buh-blee

I have to know, are people idiots or are they just trying to be amusing (which they most definitely are not succeeding at)?

Do those people - here and at other sites - who type "prolly" really think the word "Probably" is spelled that way. Even worse, do they really think it's said that way? Or is this just some more idiotic net-speak BS? Either way, it's highly annoying and portrays either ignorance or immaturity.

So, what is it? Are you guys doing this as a lame attempt to be funny? <--- operative word being "lame". I'm starting to think that's prolly (<--- notice how stupid that looks?) the case. Lord I hope that's so and that people aren't actually that dumb with the language they speak on a daily basis.

      Enquiring minds want to know.

I always type probably, but when I text it's one of the very few words I abbreviate.
A lot of my friends get pissed off at me, cause I use proper English, grammar and punctuation when I text.
So what could be a 30 character text message ends up being 145+ characters.

You understand that railing against current shifts/trends in language just makes you look old and bitter, right?

I studied English in college and by no means adopt every 1337ism that comes along, but I like 'prolly', for the look and sound of it and the way it preserves sense despite deviating from the form of the original. 'Probably' has always been cumbersome for common use, and I'll take 'prolly' over 'prob'ly' any day.
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

The terms in the following list drive me up the wall:

      u, i, r, 2, im, ur, blah blah blah...

Misuse of apostrophes really aggravates me as well.

I'd do anything to see all internet users type their words out or learn to use grammar properly. I can understand the case of non-native English speakers making a few errors, but when my screen is loaded with "im so funny lol u cant c my d**k", that's a different story.

If sense is conveyed, you've used grammar properly. Language isn't a machine with an instruction book--it grows, diversifies, changes, and it doesn't hold still until it's dead.

That cracks me up... I love when people make fun of that type of writing. "lusid dreming lol wut isti??"

"Prolly" is the least of anyone's worries. I use it in casual speech/typing. It's like "gonna" or "wanna" to me. If you're going to have a problem with "prolly," that should apply to "gonna" as well and any related abbreviations. Otherwise you're cherry picking for no reason.

This is just an innocent abbreviation. Not like "l8r," for instance. God I hate numbers mixed in with letters.

It may seem weird, but I delete any Myspace friend that uses netspeak more than the basic "lol" and whatnot.

There's this one girl who types

"liKKee thIIsSss" for every fucking word

and I didn't want to see that so I deleted her, and she takes Myspace very seriously apparently and the next time she saw me she was hella distant and she asked me why I deleted her and she almost started crying.

What surprised me is she was in advanced English classes all 4 years of High School and now she's an English major at UB, and yet she raped the very language that got her a college scholarship.

Haha I was just making fun of a friend yesterday because apparently she used to pronounce it "probally".

I've never really had a problem with all the net speak people use. Easier to take it all in in one glance. I'm a major texter so I'm prolly (hehe) just used to seeing everything abbreviated. (btw thats the first time i've ever used "prolly" in my life)

That's not weird at all; I can quite understand why you would do that. Netspeak certainly is the process of butchering a language.

Languages can change. It's not always for the worse.
Old english didn't even have "correct" spellings.
      Some examples:
fisc = fish, bricg = bridge, cild = child, olde = old (as in "Ye Olde Pub," lol..)
Correct spellings didn't even exist untill the fist dictionary.
I read an article once about internet slang slowly becomming its own sort of language. I'll see if I can find it.
Is it realy so bad to use abreviations? English is SO strange. There are so many exceptions to the pernunciation rules.
I'm not saying typing "prolly" isn't stupid. I think it is.
All I'm saying is that it's pretty harsh to say net and text speak is BUTCHERING a language.

Agreed! Let's go with the flow, people! Nothing remains constant. Let's accept it and not be old grannies about it.

The only element of your example that might persist in the language is "u," though I haven't seen "u" outside of a text message in a couple years. "Prolly," "lol," and an array of smilies, on the other hand, are likely to be around for quite a while.

I think that it's just net speak. I don't do it on forums but I occasionally use it for txt or my instant messenger.

At least people pronounce "library" correctly in most places.

I live near the ghetto and all I hear is "lie-barry"
