How to fix a lousy dye job yourself

I really don't want to go to a salon because my hairdresser is 300 miles away ATM and I don't trust anyone but her.

I'm currently sitting here with streaky hair from my most recent attempted dye job. I wanted to go for a crazy color, so I put Beyond the Zone bright purple dye in...cue my hair turning a muddy grey color. Went to Sally's for guidance and I was shown a product called ColorZap, which is apparently a "gentle" bleaching kit that is made specifically to remove the disgusting grey and brown colors that result from dye residue.

I used it and it did absolutely nothing, so I just threw on my gloves and put some new dye - Manic Panic, my trusted brand - on the hideous dirt-grey. It came out dark purple on top and remained grey on the sides and in the back. Well, not entirely - there are some flecks of vibrant purple that managed to escape the first dye job and remained their initial bleached color.

So here I sit with hair that is eleventy billion different shades of purple and grey. I wish I'd have known the Beyond the Zone dye would do this, or ele I'd have just gone with the Manic Panic to begin with. But, as always, hindsight is 20/20. I intend to use my remaining dye to paint back over the grey and see what happens, but if it still comes out looking like crap, I'm just going to dye my hair black and be done with it so I can have a head of hair that is one color.

Aside from bleaching/stripping and cutting/shaving, does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this mess a little bit? I have been told that any shampoo with green pigments can, in some way, help to remove hair dye faster - is this true? If so, I'll stock up and see if I can get this stuff washed out in the next couple of months.
