tell me about making my own songs

I've been practicing on piano but it seems everything I come up with I eventually realize it's from stuff I heard before.

Anybody who writes music gets this problem every once in a while. Just keep practicing and trying, and eventually you'll get the hang of it. Also, keeping a creative mind will help too. Sit at the piano and just...play. Don't think about it, just push stuff out of your fingers. If you hear something you like, play it again and again and let it grow. Then write it out. Also, recording sessions like this helps si you don't have to remember what you liked, and you can review later. A simple tape recorder should be sufficient. I don't know if your phone has good recording quality, but if it does, that's good too. Mine is terrible at recording audio, but I don't know about other phones so don't go by me.

Hey guys, I'm back. Feels good man

If I get a tune STUCK in my head and I can't work around it, I go through it sometimes. I'll change the tempo, then some chords and see if I can turn it into something unique.
I second the recommendation of a tape recorder. I can't write music and I don't have an instrument at this time, so it's the only way I can capture my music.

I know this seems like sort of a cop out answer, but have you considered learning music theory? More specifically, contemporary/jazz theory (not necessarily for writing jazz, but just because it's pretty common in all sorts of contemporary music).

As for song writing, are you talking instrumental or with lyrics? We can roll from there.

That happens to me all the time haha....
But the best thing you can do is to stay in the key of the song *for the most part* and dont try to make it too complicated. Like if you play something thats simple but sounds good, its better then something really hard that sounds ok. Thats my opinion anyway

      ...

Or you could strive to be different and make something complex and good att he same time. Who said you can't have both?

Maybe, but probably not the best way to go about it.

Listen. Take a class, listen some more.
Listen to everything you hear, broaden your musical spectrum. It can always get more broad.
      Experiment, Listen, test, listen.

      LISTEN.

I agree with Artelis there, take a class in music comp/theory, great stuff.

I do agree with that but drugs arent the best way for alot of people so lets speak for ourselves here.
The best advice I could give on writing original music, is to go as long as you possibly can without listening to your favorite cds or songs(preferably any music at all) and then sit down and play whatever comes out.
Fast, slow, melodic and beautiful, etc but don't force and just play. Most of the time this will relate alot to how your currently feeling and most importantly, it's something original that your wanting to hear.. mainly because you dont have any songs stuck in your head to copy.
This works for me, hope it works for you.
